12800 ISO with the Nikon D4 ...

I spotted this gecko sitting beside me on the floor last night and just happened to have the D4 nearby albeit with the rather slow 24-120 f4 G series zoom fitted. The light was pretty low so I cranked the ISO up to 12800 to take a quick pic and even at that ISO the shutter speed was 1/20 so it was fairly gloomy ... noticeably the AF still instantly snapped into perfect focus despite the gloom and low contrast.

This is virtually what came out of the camera aside form a slight adjustment to contrast and exposure in LR ... no noise reduction at all and just a little sharpening. These high end DSLRs really are remarkable ... but I guess we knew that! The D4 has one hell of a sensor! 🙂

I would love to get either the Df or D3x as a next body but that won't be happening for a few years...financially...emotionally, I'm ready now...
How does it look if you just crop for the gecko...???

The image I uploaded to facebook was a fairly heavy crop and still looked very good ... more than acceptable! They really are a remarkable camera even though they are a substantial lump.

I have a DF with the D4 sensor and it is a remarkable camera. Still like my leicas though for thoughtful creative flow but if you absolutly have to get a job done in differcult lighting or weather condtions there are none better except for maybe a D5.

Brian got such a camera for its high ISO performance. He showed me in a room with low lights how well his Nikon worked.

That sensor is the king. Here is a young male lion in near-darkness with the D4s at ISO 12800:

I have just bought the D500 for my wildlife work and it seems to be pretty close to this quality at ISO12800 - maybe a bit more luminance noise, which is not a deal-breaker for most photos.

High ISO is not my usual wheelhouse so I'm not even sure if this is good or not: (I'm usually an ISO 100 or 200 guy) But at least it gave me a shutter speed of 1/320 at f2.8. This is 12800 on the D750.
