These were shot with my Leica IIf on some Portra800 with the beautiful 12mm Heliar...

Nice shots. I'm sorry I couldn't make it to Alcatraz when I went to SF.

Looks like Portra 800 holds up pretty well.

Angeloks, your Heliar shots are always amazing. I've seen other (architectural) shots with that lens by you and they've been always great. I have this lens for a short while now, hope to be able to use it masterfully like that eventually.

Outstanding use of this lens! Would you be willing to share some of your insights into effectively using such a wide angle and not having it seem bizarre? Thanks.

Well, it's hard to explain. I'll give it a try.

First, I rarely take a person with that lens, keep it for architecture and landscape. Here's an exemple of what I don't like.

Then, you can put yourself dead centered, perfectly leveled. For these shots, it's important to be centered and leveled or else everything will look unevenly distorted.

Or you take pictures that don't have any symmetry in them and use a crooked angle. Distortion won't change anything then and you can use it to create some sort of 'point de fuite'.

For landscapes, I just try to be leveled and I look in the finder for a composition I like.

Hope it helps a little... I added a lot of pictures from the Heliar on my Flickr account, feel free to go check.

GOD DAMN!!!

Those photos are amazing. Seriously, very masterful use of that angle. But it's not only that, you also manage to get the colours just right. Very nice all around. Hats off.

Julien,

From your Alcatraz shots I especially like the third one. The way the light accentuates the square angles is terrific. From your other shots I recognize the Bright Angel Trail (Grand Canyon) below Indian Garden. Am I correct? I would love to see more of your Grand Canyon shots.

Salut,
