The best camera is one that still works!
Those are really cool. I wonder what they were arrested for.
Their fashion sense some of them I suspect ... some wild hair styles and what appears to be a man in a tutu.
I loved them all ... Diane Arbus eat your heart out, or maybe she actually worked in Oz for while?

Fantastic stuff. I read a while ago that a researcher had made a book out of these portraits. A couple of links below:

Shoot.
Beautiful photos. If it weren't for the writing on them with the subjects' details, I'd never have guessed they were mugshots…especially the first one.

And for something equally bizzare but not as artistic IMO ... http://australianmuseum.net.au/image/Death-masks-collection

IIRC, there's was a book of Australian mugshots and crime scenes available (pretty sure I saw it at the museum bookstore). Also, if you like mugshots and such, check out 'Least Wanted' on Flickr. He has had a book out for a while.

The phrase, "They don't make them like they used to" comes to mind. It seems there was a time when good enough, well--wasn't.

There is a fantastic book of this kind of stuff:
http://www.amazon.com/City-Shadows-Sydney-Photographs-1912-1948/dp/1876991208
They are all contact prints from plate negatives. They look amazing - the museum is particularly interesting and open for academic study of the work. I've been there several times.

Thanks for posting these links! Really interesting! I especially like the one where the "sitter" refuses to open his eyes!

Hey, converge your eyes on this one. You'll catch a bit of a 3D effect.

This image was taken with side by side lenses, probably to get multiple copies.
However in having side by side lenses, it is also a stereo 3D image. I took the two sides and made a 3D red-cyan anaglyph from it.
