1991 Jupiter 8

Dear all,

I have put them into both Kiev/Contax and LTM mounts and in each case they needed the appropriate shim for the mount. I agree that many LTM J8s do not need their shims modified (especially the later ones) to work on an LTM camera but all J8s (as far as I know) need shims of some sort which would be fitted in the factory.

Thanks all

Having had one of the later 91's in LTM I noticed it did not focus well but is was a stellar performer; I have now bought the contax/M adapter but now I find the only Jupiter-8's are Jupiter 8-M ones made by Arsenal - and Arsenal has not a great reputation. Can such a new old block by KMZ be inserted into a regular Kiev/Contax mount and the shim reused that is there? Can you shed some light on this please?

Hi, Yes the new/old block will work in an Arsenal Kiev Mount; I have transplanted blocks between both mounts with success. However, you can not assume that the shim will be right. It doesn't seem to be optimal in LTM for your example so maybe you can just fix it there. One thing you can try is focusing according to the rangefinder, noting the distance and very slightly under and over focusing. The mount just moves the whole block in or out so it does the equivalent of thinning or thickening the shim. One you have decided which way you you can either adapt your shim (sanding or adding aluminium foil) or scout around for broken Jupiters with different shim sets. Some have multiple thin shims. I am assuming RF use by the way.
