San disk now has a card with a built in card reader. Has anyone tried it in the r-d1? If so, how does it work? It seems to go along with the whole rangefinder travel light idea.

Do you mean the sandisk Ultra II 1G SD card with USB reader? I have one. It is workable on the R-D1.

I second the endorsement. They are great- not really an integral reader but a fold-away USB connection that really isn't as delicate as it looks- I have been using the cards exclusivley for a year with no troubles.

I am using the 2 GB one and it is terrific. Additionally, it reads way faster directly plugged in compared to when I insert it in a card reader.
