Hello.

It is my very first post here.
I have learned a lot by reading your posts and comments here.
Thanks.

I need your help.
I have a very nice still like new M8. I got offered from a guy to buy my M8 for about 60% of the recently new price - or 48% of the price I gave for it when it was new. I also got a mint like new chrome MP offered - unfortunately it costs more than I can get from my newer M8.

Should I go for the MP and lose some $$ of the M8?
Do you think the MP is more worth than the M8. Unfortunately, I cannot have both M8 and MP. Is the film MP better to own than the digital M8? I feel the digital M8 falls in value like a rock in water...

Thanks.

It all depends on what you shoot, film or digital. I love my MP, but primarily shoot slides and E6 processing is scarce locally forcing me to ship out of state or wait about 2 weeks for my local camera shop to get my slides developed. Shooting B&W negs is a different story as many do their own developing and printing. Will slide film be as plentiful in 5 years and processing be reasonably accessable? I sure hope so. If I had to go digital and wanted an M, the M9 is the way to go if you have the $$$.

Thanks for comments.
I like the use of digital, of course. However, I really prefer full format as film or M9. I like manual setting as in MP as well.

Since I do not have the extra $$, I consider to go back to film for full format 35mm. (I have had a m7 before m8.) Is it smart to go back to film to get full format? (The price of M9 is out off my range.)

First things first: Welcome to the forum!

I do not think the M8 falls like a rock in water. It will probably keep its value just nicely, a lot of people that want an M9 but cannot afford it, will settle for an M8. Demand will not fall like a rock in water for sure.

Like said before, it depends on what you want to shoot and how you want to shoot it.

Personally I am happy to have traded my M8 for an M6 Classic 0.85 and cash, when it comes to image quality and losing the stupid IR-cut filters. But, shooting film only does slow me down more than a bit. YMMV, choose your weapon.

Don't just trust the guy buying that M8 from you (too low an offer, I'd say), look around both here and on eBay to see what an M8 might fetch there before even considering an MP.

Again personally, I'd get an M6 and an M3 for the price of an MP. Oh, geez, whaddayaknow, I did! 😀

Welcome, time! Your M8, as you've noted, has suffered a loss in value, but it's likely to level off at this point. So don't worry about it, I'd say, and if you like its digital workflow then there may be no good reason to "take the loss" now and revert to a film camera... unless you'd prefer to use film!

If cash is tight you may want to consider a different film body than the MP...maybe an M6 or one of the CV body and spend your $$$ on the best lenses you can afford. Just a thought...🙂

Best regards,

Bob
