$2000 + lens shade for the Nikon 21/4 lens. That's right folks, $2000 + just for the lens shade, NO lens etc.
Why? With the exception of the lens shade for the original 50/3.5 Nikkor (a shade that probably wasn't even produced), and the lens shade for the stereo Nikkor, the 21/4 lens shade is a good bet as the rarest lens shade for the Nikon Rangefinder system. That might seem like a lot, until you consider that a mint Nikon Rangefinder 21/4 lens complete with caps, shade, and viewfinder should fetch in the $15 to $20,000 range. Ah yes, the joys of collecting and obtaining the near unobtainable.

Good thing about it is, there is a bid.....
Is it the JOY or the PAIN of collecting?

How long can it be before somebody starts forging these? It couldn't be a very difficult job for a talented machinist. And with no serial numbers, authentication would be a challenge.

The majority of items listed in these Tamarkin live auctions are already double the going rate...and that's before you add their commission. It's a shame they have so much Leica stuff for sale, but I'm sure after they sit on it a few years they'll come down to earth. I doubt they sell much at those artificially inflated prices...

I couldn't agree more. As soon as I see the "Live Auction" symbol, I pass to the next item. They are too expensive by far and can keep their overpriced stuff AFAIC.

Except that these auction items are often on consignment. Tamarkin makes its money on the commission and buyer's premium. A lot of times the opening price is set by the seller (as an alternative to having an "upset price"). It's really a no-lose situation for the auctioneer.
Besides, isn't this a preview listing for a Live Auction? (Cannot tell from work computer - eBay is "blocked" but I saw this the other night). If so, any bids here are "openers" and will set the start price for the live portion.

I have to disagree! Have you been checking prices? Nice try but, The last one(lens only) sold in Christies for under $6000(you know whos)consider that a mint Nikon Rangefinder 21/4 lens complete with caps, shade, and viewfinder should fetch in the $15 to $20,000 range
and I saw the cap and finder sell for $700!! Add the shade $2500 and box $500 and what do you get?
I made a comparison here:
http://p200.ezboard.com/fnikonhistoricalsocietyfrm7.showMessage?topicID=285.topic
If two out of four premier auction houses estimate the price under $10,000, and the last two (Christies) auctioned didn't even bring $10,000...
How do you base your estimate?
I say you are quoting prices from .....
I remember the 100cm that sold for $$$$$$$$$ Guess what? the last one didn't even do $$$$
Prices of the 21st century,
Kiu
PS, I am still awed, $2000 for a shade? Oh what a pain

Let's not forget the 5100 dollar lens shade and lens cap (that's 5100 each!) for the 50 mm 1.1 Nikkor some years ago on ebay.

Now there's a word that triggered a memory of reading 'Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance' by Robert Pirsig.
The main person is riding a battered Honda while one of his buddies rides a high class BMW. At some point, the handle bars of the BMW start to loosen. No fun of course on a $$$ bike. But then the main person points out a solution.. the beamer rider needs a shimmy!
The confusion comes of course when the beamer rider wants to search out a BMW dealership to special order a part, while a shimmy could be a strip of aluminium cut from a empty soda can.
Very interesting to see how something that's perceived as a solution for a problem by one is seen as devaluation of a possession by another..

"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" was a book that I read during an impressionable age (while tinkering with a beat-up old motorcycle) and it has probably helped define my relationship with technology ... to understand how the laws of nature affect the way man-made things work in such a way that you're comfortable with putting home-made tin or cardboard shims into cameras and lenses, for example. I've always remembered the story of the BMW-owners quest for a top-of-the-line shim.
I once held a Nikon RF 21mm lens in my hand. It was at a photo swap meet in Germany about 17 years ago. I had no idea of its rarity and neither did the seller, and I was looking for an SLR lens for a colleague, so moved onto another table. A couple of hours later I looked through a camera collecting book and realized the stunning rarity of the Nikon RF 21mm lens. Alas, it was long gone from the seller's table. Seeking a user lens, I eventually got the Zeiss 21mm f/4.5 and have enjoyed it but wish it wasn't so darned heavy.

The Nikon lens hood for my 35mm F2.5 in Leica screw mount is 34.5mm attachment size, just like the filters. I saw the proper hood on the bay for over $1,400......that was 6 months ago. It is being relisted this week.
