I think I am about an order of magnitude cheaper than anyone who could even imagine paying three or four figures for a lens shade. I rationalize that by placing a high value on ingenuity, especially ingenuity that does not cost anything.
My favourite bodge is a lenscap for my old Nikon 8mm f2.8 fisheye lens. The glass surface is terribly exposed, of course, so a lenscap is important. I discovered that there is a standard round-bottomed Tupperware bowl that fits perfectly. I have been using that for about 20 years now.
