Hi,

Any one interested in being a part of this, anyone want to organise it? I see there hasn't been a FSU Contest for a few years so maybe everyone has moved on but I think it's worth asking.

Maybe a "show me a shot from your FSU" thread would have more appeal.

Opinions and suggestions?

Cheers,
Brian

I participated in one or two of the past contests, it was fun but the problem was getting enough votes. We ended up with several entries tied at 3 votes apiece, or some such. I think an ongoing thread might work better.

Seems fine to me. Camera and / or lens made in FSU; could start on May 1st ("Commie Camera Day" ) , last day to be decided...

Regards

Joao

Thanks for the replies guys and now for the rules and general guidelines.

I think we should use this thread as at the moment there are only 6 of us and that doesn't warrant a whole government department.

Start on May 1st last day to shoot may 31st.

Enter as many images as you please and add them to this thread. The more images the better as I want this thread to have some life.

Posts in the thread may discuss you camera, your photography or even stories about Russia.

Equipment. All types of camera from little spy ones to large format no restrictions at all. Also included are the cameras from areas under soviet influence i.e Czechoslovakia and the DDR. So that Flexaret or Practika are as good as a Zorki or Lubitel as far as eligibility.

At the end of the month we will discuss in a gentlemanly fashion what images are the best and prizes will be awarded. I have a RFF 10 softie that I will offer as a prize.

Theme - Anything relating to CCCP or Russia in any way with the widest and most liberal interpretation.

Your thoughts?

Count me in. I'll dust off my FSU shooters and use only the finest Marxist-Leninist shooting techniques! Glory to the Soviet Cameras!

<ahem> sorry got carried away there.

I'll bookmark this thread and keep watching.

I don't suppose FSU lenses on digital bodies count? Thought so.

I have a new-to-me Kiev 4 that needs some work but I cold press it into service at the 2 or 3 shutter speeds that do sound correct.

Well comrade if that is all you have then use it, I have no prejudice against the use of digital capture so go for it.

In fact if you were a poor Russian and all you owned was a 3 mp digital camera I would let you submit images of your country and its people.

At the moment due to some problems in recent months I do not own a film camera and so I'm looking on the local site for something suitable. Could be an old Zenit or a Smena 8 it matters not as long as we all enter in to the spirit of the thing.

Just a question: how broad can we consider the "FSU" category? Can we also include 'Warsaw Pact' countries? I have a couple East German cameras that I'd like to use.

BTW I've already dusted of my Kiev 88 and loaded it with Tri-X, can't wait to get shooting!

As wide as you think you could explain to a KGB Colonel :) Warsaw Pact is ok so the DDR and Czechoslovakian cameras can play too.

bgb -- that is excellent news. I have my Praktica camera ready to go, as well as my Kiev 4 rangefinder.

It is almost May 1st. Soon, we will demonstrate the superiority of Socialist camera technology!

Hi Brian,

was just about tae sign up but see that the parameters have changed. There's already half a dozen threads with FSU lenses only. What's the point in another?

Had ye stuck tae FSU camera and lens, it would have been different and more interesting. And DSLRs, what's the point in that? Nothing against them, ah have 2.

Having whinged about all that; ah'll probably contribute anyway....

Fair point and something I considered, my concern was that if I said Russian/Ukrainian rangefinder cameras only there might be a roll call of two. As it is there is less that 10 of us so not really a serious contest just a chance to shoot and share.

Here's my first contribution:
Camera: Kiev 4a (1981 model)
Lens: Helios-103
Film: Tri-X, developed in XTOL

I have a Flexaret that needs testing and a Fed-3 with a broken base plate lock and I-61 that might be pressed into service, possibly with creative light leaks. I'll see what I can do..
