2016 Hits and Misses

What are your picks as the biggest camera Hits and Misses of 2016?

To me the biggest camera announcement of 2016 was the new medium format Fuji GFX 50s, available 2017. With lenses designed for future 100MP sensors, I think it will redefine the medium format market.

To me the most important new lens of 2016 is the Voigtlander 10mm/5.6 in Leica M or Sony E mount. Full frame 35mm cameras have been sold over 100 years since the Multi-Exposure Simplex was first sold over the counter in 1914.

In all of that time and millions of full frame cameras and lenses, there has never been a full frame rectilinear 10mm lens until NOW. Mr. K continues to impress.

To me the biggest misses are what we did not see at Photokina ..
- a high end Nikon mirrorless camera
- a high end Canon mirrorless camera
- updated Nikon 810
- updated Leica M240.

Hopefully we will see solutions to all of those misses in 2017.

What are your hits and misses of 2016?

Stephen

the canon mirrorless models are currently bargain of the century ratings for folks shooting video. most models have all the right boxes checked. you can equip yourself with a full working kit, with audio, for the price of most mirrorless bodies with equal video specs.

hope they keep flopping.

Presumably this is helped by most video folks using manual focus?

I have the original EOS M and the autofocus is glacial at best (with the 22mm).
I've been tempted by the M5 (once the price stops being a punchline) to mount the 22 on and use it 90% for that.

I still have the Eos M body, it's interesting to think of using it for video, even just for trying stuff out on.

Major Miss: I don't like it at all that Fuji instant film FP-100C was discontinued. Fuji should be ashamed to allow such a decision.

Major Hit: Leica CEO Oliver Kaltner met with us in Wetzlar. I know; this is not a camera, but Leica makes camers.

Yes, indeed functionality makes it the bargain that it is. Robust codec, audio monitoring and input, large sensor and manual focus.

Is it the best? No way. A superb deal for a video kit? Definitely

Hit - the consensual acceptance that the Leica M5 is the best Leica ever made.
Miss - that it took so long for people to realize this.

Hit: Leica M-D. Lots of balls and the only digital camera I would consider getting
Miss: Leica M-D. If only those balls were bigger it could have been so much more than an M240 without a screen.

I believe a hit is the Hasselblad mirrorless medium format digital camara.

A miss, I don't see or hear too much about the Leica smartphone.
