2020 - 2021: Pandemic, Lockdowns and More

Remote learning doldrums. Zoom is probably not the ideal learning environment for a preschooler, but it's all we had.

During lockdown, local sports clubs and gyms held zoom training sessions. It was pretty cool to see.

Love it! Is there a story to this photo?

I didn’t take this, but it’s the Library Lawn at UNSW Sydney Campus.

Great photo! Really captures the combination of isolation and ennui during that time.

Thanks. Yes, it's from the University campus around June 2020 when we had come out of a full lockdown but were still in one of those in-between periods where many things (including the University) where still closed and social contact was extremely minimal.

I had to go into the campus for one work task and caught this guy just enjoying the serenity of the almost entirely empty campus (that's ordinarily such a busy, noisy place.)

A couple of other shots from the same roll on my IIIc, 50/3.5 Elmar, all on T-Max.

Yes, the weirdness of school in the kitchen. I really wonder what our/the kids will all remember of this time, I suspect very little since it was so hard to 'make new memories' sitting around the house all day.

I talk to my son about it a lot. He was 6 and in grade 2 at school. Over the following 2 years he missed out on a lot, but we also did a lot of things we would never have done otherwise. He remembers a lot, funny things like the guy at our local music store who had a mask with a guitar soundhole print over his mouth, the small things we did in the garden in lieu of going out, he remembers most things.

My older son was in Oxford University, UK for his masters and hardly left campus. What a wasted opportunity.

My younger son had entered Rutgers College the year before now moved off campus for more independence but could barely go anywhere. And he lived a few blocks from the NJ Transit station that could have taken him to NY Penn in 40 minutes. He said the his college life was ruined. Moved out of the house for the college life but had to attend zoom classes? A lot of students went back home and many sued for refunds the difference between cost of zoom vs a real classroom.

I was a trade consultant in HK and had to retire early because everything was closed in the AP region so had no one to consult. I was able to walk around and capture some history:IMG_7667.jpeg

I have to say, there is something incredibly cool about having a IIIc or similar vintage film camera as your walkaround at uni. Super images.

@Freakscene @coogee @dourbalistar I wonder what effects the pandemic had on kids, with regards to their experiences of school and social activity. No doubt there have already been studies, but what were things like for yours?
Many of those effects are yet to be seen, but I think younger kids are more resilient and/or have more time to recover so to speak. I actually feel worse for older high school and college age kids like @Rayt's sons. Some of my friends had older kids, and those high school juniors and seniors lost out seminal coming of age experiences, like prom, high school graduation parties, etc... Basically that whole carefree time of life between high school and college was lost, spent sheltering in place and probably with the people they least wanted to spend time with (i.e. stuck at home with parents versus going out with friends).

Everywhere were signs to remind us of social distancing.

He is more aware of the principles of disease transmission, dislikes being in crowds (we'll catch something!), is less well socialised, and more specifically educated (his Italian reading and speaking is stellar, thanks to his teacher who loaned us a bunch of material) but less broadly educated (he has never been to Italy, and he has not done a lot of outdoor things we definitely would have done as he got bigger if we weren't restricted) than he would have been without the plague.

I could go on about this for days, but ultimately I think the main effects were negative and his generation is more anxious and less well socialised than they would have been otherwise.

@Taipei-metro I hear you on the social distancing! This scene was at a local Bunnings Warehouse, a giant hardware chain not unlike Lowes in America. No one could go in to the store, but they could purchase online and collect on site. With social distancing, of course.

That really sucks for your sons, and the students who were forced into Zoom tuition but were still paying full fare. Do you have more images of HK in that time? Although I know people in HK, I haven't seen many images from those times. In fact, I planned to go in 2018, but the civil unrest made me stay away. Then the pandemic hit and no one was going anywhere.

I'm a therapist by day, and in January 2020 I started a new job where most of my clients would be teenagers and young adults. It ended up being the most challenging year of my professional life.

That sliver of time between everyone in my community being vaccinated, and before the serious variants came, sure was a good time...

Yes but they are mostly of people smoking with masks dangling on their chin. I wasn’t interested in photographing people in masks so tried to catch them on their smoking breaks.IMG_6428.jpeg
