Though a very happy owner of black and also now a silver chrome finish 35mm new MP I am wondering if the silver chrome finish is not as resilient as I remember from having an M3 and an M2 in the past. Would I be right in thinking the finish sometimes looks a touch dirty even when hardly used? I'm not too bothered but if that is my instinct almost before getting to use it should I expect it to stay that way or gradually deteriorate? Is it just a matter of a cautious wipe down or is it some sort of oxidation or even a fault?

I know it's easy to get too paranoid over cosmetics but with a high value item it's to be expected!

Thank you,

Thomas

AFAIK, the silver chrome MP finish is applied exactly as is has since the beginning. The only difference is the brass stock is now CNC milled from a solid block of brass instead of punched from a sheet of brass. The CNC process is far less labor intensive and the finished brass plates are not polished and finished as they used to be, but I don't know that this has any affect on the way the finish wears.

When I had mine (back in 2007), I remember that every few days I was wiping fingerprints etc from the top-plate of my silver chrome MP and found it annoying. The M3 I had at the same time didn't accumulate dirt that quickly.

Thank you, Bill. I think I had better just get on and enjoy shooting with the camera and forget about it. If after a few more months I notice it really as got worse then decisions can be made then. I found a very nice early Elmar collapsible 50/2.8 to go with it and will start using that soon with a yellow filter - looking forward to it.

Thanks, Maddoc. If it isn't actually doing any harm I think I'll just wipe it off after a shoot and not worry too much. Hopefully a bit of a routine will just tame the irritation!
