I was wondering if there is a 21mm lens that will have a rendering close to the 35mm Summicron pre-asph at F2-2.8 ? I don't want the sharpness of the newer generations of lenses.
This is for the M8 so the Super-Angulon is out of the picture.

I doubt that anybody will design and produce a 21mm lens these days that has the Old Look you might expect from a Super Angulon. This afternoon a guy noticed that I was carrying an M3 with my 21/3.4 S.A. and started up a conversation about just that ~ old lenses vs. new lenses. Turns out he's in the motion picture business. We have a sizeable movie and video industry here in North Miami. His concerns were pretty much no different than our concerns. He prefers the look of film but the money people claim digital is cheaper. He says the time spent in post eats up whatever savings there are. Then he got into a rant about the latest Zeiss lenses being too contrasty, harsh bokeh, and horribly over priced compared to Schneider or Angenieux.

At any rate he says that he prefers shooting film and getting it scanned. Better shadow detail, better color, less blown highlights, he said, even with the Arri eating the stuff at eighteen inches per second. We exchanged cards and planned to meet for lunch.

Why is the SA out of the picture?
It works with the M8 .... it just does not meter right with M8.
But it also does not meter right with M7 M6 etc...
You at least have an LCD to check exposure ..... (metering the 21sa with the m8 gives you about 3 stops underexposure) So you can dial in the maximum of +2 stops and adjust from there .... or use a handmeter!

The 21/3,4 would not be a good candidate anyway as it is markedly different in its rendition from the 35f2 IV. A lens with a decent correction and still "vintage" look would be the Kobalux 21f2.8 or possibly the Ricoh 21f3.5 (scarce and expensive though). Check on Flickr for various lenses and get an idea how they render light. The VC lenses are OK, but probably contrastier than you would want, the Zeiss/Leica offerings are even "snappier" than that. One lens to look for would be the pre-asph Elmarit 21f2.8. Lower contrast than the asph's and decent sharpness.
