21mm Super Angulon

Thanks Oleg and Maddoc.

Sleepyhead: Slap yourself in the head for even thinking about selling that black M3 21 f/3.4 finder 🙄, unless you want to sell it to me😀. It's as gorgeous of a camera lens finder outfit as I have ever seen. I'm going to check out your Flickr. Post some shots on this thread. I've been loving my new 28 Voigtlander, isn't that always the way, but had the chance to press a few frames with the 21 F and my M6. I will post them later this week. I'm really thinking of getting a 21 finder (it'll be a good excuse to spend money) and feel it will inspire me to use the lens more.

Excellent advice!

Excellent advice!

There is a very simple solution to all this. Do what I do - never sell or get rid of a lens! OK, the cabinets are bulging a bit - but I sleep well, not regretting any of these "disposals".

Excellent advice, Tom! Wish you were around 20 years ago to give it!

Thought I'd post a few here, seeing as I have a 'handle' on this lens now:

Had to send my Super Angulon to the repair shop last year. It started to rattle when shaken fore and aft, and thought this might mean something loose inside. The repair man said that a couple retaining rings had come undone, and also mentioned it being the first time he'd seen this on a SA.

I imagine this problem was a result of the 38 years of heavy use the lens has gotten. Too many trips in the back of LandRovers or motorcyles tends to shake things up a bit.

If you're buying one, it shouldn't rattle!

Links to a few more M4 + 21mm Super Angulon shots for anyone interested.

As Tom says, when you get a GOOD ONE, don't be stupid and sell it!

Glenn

Great photos Glenn !

I just got this lens and have only used it on a few rolls but love it so far. Thanks to this site for encouraging me to get it.

Thanks Matt335 and JSU for your kind words. The reflexions are nice indeed.
I use Tri-X in D-76 1+1
I have used the whole negative. No cropping at all. The distance is between the camera and the girl is just fifteen inches.

For those of you who are looking to buy a 21f3.4 - one thing to check is that the "barrel" that holds the lenses in place is not rattly. It is not a big deal if it is - but great for price negotiations. On the S-A the "tube" that holds the rear lens elements unscrews and you will see a ring with three screws in it. This assembly can come lose - the screws slowly unthreading themselves. If you can "wiggle" the front of the lens in the focussing barrel - this is usually the problem.
For some reason aircrafts/motor cycles are bad for them!!!!
You can tighten the screws yourself - but be careful with slipping screw-drivers! One of mine got so loose that it looked and felt like a tilt and shift lens. I was stuck up in the Canadian arctic and extreme cold did not help either as metal 'shrinks". In the end I borrowed some nail polish from a friendly secretary. She did not even bat an eyelid when I asked - Maybe there is more to northern living than I think. I brushed some on the threads and let it dry to 'sticky" and tightened the screws.
Once the job was finished - I sent the lens to Leica Canada for cleaning. A couple of days later a phone call "Tom, did you try to fix it yourself?" I admitted to it and the nailpolish. "Damn, we have destroyed 2 perfectly fine, expensive screwdrivers on it" They sent it back and it has never come loose again - though any future service is a bit iffy.

Thanks for the tip, Tom. I just checked mine and it has no wobble.

I do love how this lens draws. Here is a recent one. Maybe Tom can identify the location in Berkeley 😀

I got this lens not too long ago so I haven't experimented too much, but I was wondering if anyone has an opinion as to what could be causing the black shape in the sky in this shot. It appeared in the same place in many shots. I used a hood and also had a uva filter on for some shots (leica telyt).

I loved mine and sorry I sold it when I got my M8. Apparently, it coldn't be used on that camera without fear of damaging the shutter, sayeth Leitz. I sold mine for more then I bought it new - $1500.
