21mm Super Angulon

I'm looking to pick up this lens (early serial), but I was told that the rear of the lens had been professionally modified to fit the M5. Anyone know what the specifics are in regards to the actual work done to the lens body? I'm using an M6 so the mod doesn't apply to me, but would I be purchasing a compromised lens (optically/structurally/mechanically) at all?
 
No. It is just a cut-out in the mounting flange. The M5 detects if a lens if mounted or not by a small pin in the camera mount. When there is no lens mounted, the meter-arm does not swing out. So with the modified mounting flange of the SA-M, the camera gets the information "no lens mounted" and the meter-arm stays inside. It doesn`t affect any other M Leica and the CL does not have such a sensor so the meter-arm of the Leica CL would be damaged.

Finally I got my at the beginning of the month. Super-Angulon 3,4, 1964, nice shape, with sun shade. I also acquired already the "missing" front lens cap. I'm happy with my choice.

beautiful photos. Your SA shots make me want to buy one so badly. Dangerous as theres one in my local camera shop with finder and being an unemployed student (only till tomorrow too) it wouldnt be sensible
 
Chris, I understand completely what you are saying, but with that kit does "sensible" come into the buying process? Good luck ! I just looked at your blog and you have some great wide-angle images too !

6th., June 2010, my son Thomas is just having fun. It was quite strange to use the M3 instead of a D3 for fun shooting, but some of you will understand. I messed up the development and had to fix the film for the second time. 🙁

Yes, you are right about the stand development. One hour. I souped the Efke and one Rollei Retro one Arista Premium and one Lucky 100 at the same time. Seems like one hour with film shoot at marked sensibility works. Absolute minimum agitation and pre-wash. It was just at test :angel:
I scanned this test at 1200 dpi with the Epson V700 and no sharpening until after PS level and RFF jpg format conversion.

The lens had a red filter on 😎
 
Quick question. I rarely find the need for the f/3.4 stop, however, is it effectively one full stop from f/4 on this lens? I don't use a meter, so I'm never sure if I'll be over or under exposed.

I don't think so, the 4 blade construction is affecting the images. I was also a bit afraid of that, but I couldn't notice any negative consequences.

I think the size of the lenses in conjunction with the focal length and the symmetrical design eliminates problems. This is not a lens to use it wide open and from 5,6 till 8 is DOF rendering no issue any more.

I shoot into the sun a lot so ugly starbursts would annoy me. The 21/4 SA doesn't seem to need any new coatings. It looks spectacular as is.
