Quick question: anyone got any info on using a SuperAngulon 21/3.4 on an Epson R-D1S? Will it work?
Some here have done really nice work with the SA on the R-D1, but I found it to be too big a PITA. Exposure comp -2 is the max the camera gives you, but that isn't always enough, depending on aperture and focus distance. The light falloff was also really pronounced, and I found it was often weirdly at the left and right edges, rather than just quaintly in the corners. Beautiful lens, but I couldn't get used to it on the R-D1. I sold it and got a CV 21/4 P which, while far less characterful, is far simpler to use on the R-D1. YM, of course, MV.

And I sincerely thank you for selling it! I sold my first one then I got it (formerly yours) from Ben and then he missed it enough that he bought another one.
The Super Angulon rules the roost.

How about a Super-Angulon 21/3.4 on a Minolta CLE? Anyone done that?
Works fine on a CLE, just no meter.

Peter,
that is real cool! My finder is almost frosted glass from dust and I'd like to clean it up, also one internal element is rattling.
Can you supply a written description on how to go about with getting the elements and spacers out, to accompany the photos? Would be much appreciated!
EDIT: Never mind, the screws in my finder are stripped, they won't budge...![]()
The screws only hold on the flash shoe so it's not absolutely necessary to remove them.
To remove the internals you have to remove the front element first and then the others come out one by one.
The front element is held in with glue so using a small cutting knife you can gently scrape away the glue and then separate the element from the alloy body with the knife.
You can use my photo as a guide but make sure you note how the two glass elements go in. (from the left, items 3 and 4)
Again from the left, items 8 and 9 are removed by gentle twisting each one in turn. Item 10 is a rubber ring that comes off very easily.
The hardest part is cleaning all of the elements and then reassembling the view finder without trapping any dust inside.
I used a silicone craft glue to install the first element once I was happy with the view finder.
I did consider using an epoxy glue but that would make it very difficult to disassemble the view finder if I ever needed to again.
Please be careful when doing anything like this. As you know a 21mm view finder is very expensive new or second hand.
A good camera tech should have a Clean Cabinet for work on lenses or view finders.
This cabinet draws air through a Heppa filter in the top and pushes filtered air down into the cabinet so the inside of this cabinet is dust free.
This is a picture is from a Google search.

I would guess it's either dust or mould. If it doesn't bother you I would just leave it alone.

Oh Hey Peter: No i don't think the VF has dust or Mold in it
its probably refractions of Light from a small crack in the VF
A kaleidoscope of a Beautiful Pattern & Colors ... blues, beige, golds, pale green...very Trippy
No it dosen't bother me since its below the Frameline Area...

some really nice shotsTo me the 21mm Super Angulon is a special kind of lens. Mine has produced some of my best images. The only magazine cover I ever sold was a 21 SA shot. Another time while traveling in India was able to get access to the crypt beneath the Taj Mahal. Just time for one frame wide open on Kodachrome 64. Was loaded for bright sunlight and never expected to get a chance for such a shot.
Occasionally while shooting contra jour, I've had an unusual type of flare show up. It looks like bars of a rainbow and in some cases can be quite attractive. Have tried to reproduce the effect but it happens very rarely.
I don't have much luck posting images on RFF so will just provide links in case anyone has an interest. All were shot with 21mm Super Angulon (Later f/3.4 version) on an M4.

I bought my 21 new in 1970 for the grand sum of $363 and think that included finder. What a deal! It's a lens I'll never sell.

Tom, that is why you are the freaking MAN!! If only I.......There is a very simple solution to all this. Do what I do - never sell or get rid of a lens! OK, the cabinets are bulging a bit - but I sleep well, not regretting any of these "disposals".
