The 23cII head, has a nice amount of pre measured settings for distance for negative sizes. I would like to have someone tell me why there is a seperate size for 35mm negatives, and 35 SLIDE negatives in a mounted carrier.

The negative itself is the same size last i checked.. SO why the two distances?

For ME on MY enlarger, with dichro head installed, the 35mm slide is best for the 35mm negatives. Although i cant use a 50mm lens as i get a wierd football shape to the image on the easel

If you're using the condensers, those settings are for the condensers so they project even lights across the film. The reason for the setting being different for 35mm negs and slides is that the slide holder holds the film at a different distance from the light source than the carrier for negs does. You're getting that weird effect with a 50mm lens because you have the condensers set wrong. Set them back to the 35mm neg setting and it should go away.
