i keep going back and forth on using a 25 or a 28 on the rd1.
also if a 25 if the newer cv 25 would satisfy me as much as a zm 25...but thats another matter.
so...do you use a 25 or a 28 on your rd1 and why?

Not sure what your lens line-up is, but I think the CV 21 does the job during the day and the 28 1.9/2.0 takes care of everything else, without having to spend on something in between.
I'd like the rokkor-c 28, but they seem to elude me...

right now, i have 12/15/28/40/50/75
i wonder about getting rid of the 28 for a 25 - 38 vs 43 fov -
also thinking i don't really need the 12 or the 75.

I really liked 28mm as a "normal." If you want to add something, try the CV 21...

i just sold my zm 21, don't care for it on the rd1.

Joe, my set up is 15/35/90 which gives me 22/52/135 equivalent. I was trying to duplicate my old CLE set up but with a little more at both ends. It's only a couple of months now but if I were doing it again I'd bet a 21 for the wide end. The 15 is not good on the RD-1. When I had one previously, I used an M-Rokkor but had trouble seeing the frame lines.
I recently went to the Rose parade and from our seats, the 35 was to short and the 90 was too long, so now I'm thinking of adding a 50. Oh, well, it's only money.

Joe,
On any 1.5X crop camera, I've always preferred the 24mm - so 25 in your case. Personal preference of course, but I'd rather be a little wider than longer... *lens speaking!*

Are 28mm framelines accurate with 25mm lenses? Just curious.

so far my 2 favourite lenses on the rd1 are the 15 and the 40 - 24 & 60 fov
on ff, i loved the 35 but on the rd1 that 53 fov just didn't do it for me.
i also like the 50 - 75 fov - but then i always liked a 75 on ff as well.

I haven't tried 25mm on the R-D1. 28/f1.9 for me. If not wide enough I use the 21/f4. But would have liked a 12 or 15. So setup is 21/28/35/50/90 x 1.5 of course.

28mm because it's a closer match the the internal frame lines and it would be a shame to not use that big, bright, 1:1 viewfinder.

if you ever get the opportunity try a 15 on the rd1, it is wonderful.
i'm not sure why but the 21 seemed like an 'off' focal length on the rd1 for me, but the 15 seems so right.
i was sorta surprised at how much i like the 40 on the rd1 as i have never had a 60 or close lens before. of course, there used to be lots of 58 mm lenses on the early slrs.

likely i would use the 28 frame lines with a 25 and guesstimate the difference.

Joe, I have a hunch you're not gonna be happy until you scratch the itch and try a 25. But, for me, part of the appeal of the RD1 has been that I haven't had to buy a single new lens for it. If I started to buy glass to suit the camera I think I'd rather put that money toward upgrading (debatably) to an M8 so more of the 28's fov is revealed, with bigger files thrown in.

actually, i have tried a 25 on the rd1. i bought a used cv 25 ltm but didn't keep it for very long.
the zm 28 is a great lens but is starting to feel a bit big (who knows why?) and so i have been thinking of something smaller...and thought of the new m mount cv 25 with the tab (much preferred to the silver knob on the ltm version).
this all could be mid winter cabin fever stir craziness...

maybe i should be asking about a comparison between the zm 28 and the cv 25 or even the cv 28/3.5.
though i have owned all these before.
maybe i should just get dressed and go out and shoot something.

Your problem is my problem too. Actually I'm a pentaxian, owning many prime lenses, but I wanted to have a look over the fence. I bought a used R-D1 and a new Planar 2/50 ZM (which is wonderful!) in november. Since then I'm looking for a completion at the wide end. I think, I'll buy the VC 25 mm pancake type because of its handiness, making the R-D1 a point-and-shoot-cam. Because of the relative "small" sensor of the R-D1, for landscapes (wider than 25mm) i prefer using my Pentax and the 20 mm / F3,5 Color Skopar SL II to have more details in possible big prints.

I've been using CV25 Snapshot Skopar most of the time through this winter, and it has its strengths and weaknesses
Strengths: it's a great P&S lens, good DoF and sharp enough for landscapes, also its FOV is pretty much 100% VF. Plus the click-stops are handy for street stuff
But: serious vignetting on the R-D1! However with +2/3 exp. comp. and a simple Import Preset in Lightroom I've pretty much got that whacked, so
Love it
Still would like a 28 of comparable size & weight, though...

It seems like there are two issues here, focal length and size/bulk. While I strongly like the 24/25mm view on a 1.5x crop camera, the absence of 25mm framelines would steer me to the 28mm.
Preferring small size would steer you toward either the CV 25/4 or the CV 28/3.5. Fortunately both are excellent optics, and I too have had both. The ZM options are both much more sizable... and faster!
