Hi there, I have a Bessa R2A, has lines for 35mm BUT they say if you look at the entire view you get about 28mm...my question is with the RD-1...if you look at the entire view is that going to be like 25mm... as in could you shoot a 35mm lens and be pretty close or maybe a 40mm????????

I think you've misunderstood the R-D1 viewfinder: the 28mm frame shows the field of view on the R-D1, so it matches (more or less!) what you get with a 28mm. The entire view will be roughly what you get with a 25mm. For a 35 or 40mm, you would use the 35mm frame.

What Pfogle said is correct - if you go to the edges of the viewfinder (ignoring the brightlines) you'll approximate a 25mm lens. However, as you might have been asking, due to the 1.53 factor of the sensor, that'll end up as about 38mm effective focal length.

wrong.
the focal length of a 25mm lens will effectively always be ... 25mm, regardless of the size of the sensor or film.
only the field of view will change with the size of sensor/film.

so, correct is: the FOV of the 25mm lens on the R-D1 matches the FOV of a 38mm lens in 135 photography.

(sorry for being that pedantic, but FOV is not the only effect of focal length)

Thank-you , on reading what I written, it did seem a little garbled...but what I was getting at was if I use 25mm with out an external finder will the VF cover it (approx) and therefore I can shoot something close to 35mm FOV....so thanks for clarifying things...now CV just needs to put out an f1.4 25mm lens and then I'll take the plunge

Once again thanks and merry xmas
