25mm without ext view? using framelines ?

Im contemplating adding a wide angle to my "arsenal" to finish it off.. although I was inclined to a 28mm lens ( so I can use the framelines in my M7 ), someone told me ( well two people actually ) that I can use a 25mm CV or ZI without an external viewfinder... I just assume the whole area of my viewfinder .. including the "out" are of my framelines... Is that so ?

Im just worried because my staple lens is the 35mm and 28 and 35 are not that wide apart... but 25 and 35 are.. If I only had to use a external viewfinder in critical framing pictures, were in the rest I could use that technique (assuming that everying that shows up in the viewfinder is the picture ) and still got it right, could work for me 🙂

The 28 framelines are already hardly visible.

I feel a slow, high contrast 28 (CV 28/3.5) and faster a little less contrast
35 (like your 35/2) go very well together.

I used the 25/2.8 ZM on my ZI using the whole finder without a problem. However, I wouldn't do the same thing using my .72 MP as I can barely even see the 28mm lines.
 
hummm that was one of my thoughts ( I have e .72 M7, on which the 28mm are visible not that great ) ... So the 25mm area should be quite more than the viewable in camera viewfinder. Maybe that would work in a .56 viewfinder camera...
 
I also have a 0.72 mag M7 and when my 24mm/f2.8 lens is on it I need to use a VF, which in my case is the CV 25mm finder. I cannot frame reasonably accurately without it. I am seriously considering the forthcoming CV R4A which has parallax corrected framelines for 21/25, 28, and 35/50.
 
I was actually using my setup tonight. a .85x M7 with a 25mm Biogon and a 25mm CV viewfinder.

The framelines on the .85 are definitely out of the question for composing with the 25. With the viewfinder it makes the process so much easier.

Agreed. You can compose tight and would prob get used to it but this will be no good for critical framing of course. I shot a few rolls using the entire finder of my MP3 with a 28 and got basically what I saw as the 28 frames on a 0.72 are right against the edge in any case. 25mm is going to capture a fai bit more than you would be able to see looking straight thru a Leica 0.72 finder. Prob more like the entire 0.58 finder looking straight thru (without searching the edges)
 
I wouldn't go without the external VF. And the CV25/4 is sold together with the vf, so why not use it? On my Bessa L and R, I never found it a hindrance.
 
So external viewfinder a must then... Well, I was just hoping it could be done without, just because of the thing of carrying along one more thing.. My most enjoyable afternoons are the one I carry the M7 in one jack pocket and the other with a couple of rolls... Adding a new lens, plus polarizer, plus viewfinder... now that calls for a bag 🙂

Well, here's what you originally wanted to hear: 🙂

I use the ZM 25/2.8 on my M7 .72 - without an external viewfinder.

No good for "critical framing" - but then you want a pro SLR with 100% viewfinder for that 🙂

It's basically, everything you can see, when moving your head around a bit. Not ideal, but you get used to it. You could always try the lens without - and then get the VF later.

Nah, that'll never work. You practically have to push your eyeball into the 0.72 finder to see the 28mm framelines and they're undersized anyway. Either go with a 28 or use a 25mm finder with your 25mm lens.
 
Without any viewfinder, just look in and think you will have more than you see 😀 I do same on Zeiss ikon 0.72 and same on M7 0.58.....

I took a 25 with me on a trip, used it on an m6 .72 and an RD-1, in both cases guessing coverage without an external viewfinder (I bought my lens used, and saved a few bucks more by leaving it off). Just used the whole viewfinder on the camera, which is worse for me since I wear glasses.

The external VF is actually easier to use than the built in RF/VF. You don't need to worry about focusing with a 25mm lens (use zone focusing) and the external VF is quicker to use. With an M7 just pick a middlin shutter speed and shoot fast.
