28/1.9 Ultron Review

Nice job, Brian! I'm a bit prejudiced since I just received my 28 Ultron last week and we're still in the honeymoon phase, but I think this one is going to be a keeper.

One minor quibble - a small typo, where you refer to the 28 Skopar as a f/2.5 lens in the second paragraph, the one titled "Why?".

I'm happy to see a review with real pictures instead of a bunch of numbers that most of the time don't mean anything to me. Good shots, nice review Brian! I'm afraid of R4 coming out. I can't pay for it because it means buying this lens and a 21mm also.
Chanting: you are happy with just a 40Nokton, you are happy with just a 40Nokton, you are happy with just a 40Nokton....
 
Nice article & pictures, Brian.

I fully agree with "Through the CV lens lineup, contrast and tonality properties are generally consistent within the same series" which is why I sometimes carry both 28/1.9 and 28/3.5. The 35/1.7 and 28/1.9 Ultrons are so similar in result that it is sometimes difficult for me to distinguish the pictures. WRT viewfinder, try the mini-finder on your R2a ...

Picked up a clean used one from B&H last month. It now lives on my R-D1

It's balanced.

Nothing is perfect, even if it is my favorite lens. ;)

Excellent Review Brian! You really have all points that I like about this lens covered! (thou a word on distortion would be great but maybe too much praise ;) )

keep up the good work! looking forward to your Skopar21 review (another gem by CV imho) and the lanthar 90 (there is soo few info on the web)

Yeah, I got it. Seems that while cleaning up some old code and trying to integrate a new forum a couple things broke. I'm looking into it :)

Read you review. Did/do you shoot with the Ultron's supplied lens hood on or off?

Seems to me that WITH the hood on, the lens would obscure more of the viewfinder than you indicated in your review. Please clarify.

BTW, are you sure it's the fastest 28 for RF? Cosina is notorious for overstating their specs. ;)

I shot with the hood on. The hood obscures the bottom-right corner of the VF in my R2a up to ~ 1/2mm short of the 90mm framelines. The same goes for the 50 Nokton. The 35 Ultron is just slightly less then that. :)

Thanks! I'm working on a few other reviews and will also be making some feature and visual changes soon.

The "fastest 28 for an RF" comes via the information on CQ, which is an invaluable reference (albiet sometimes gooey). I don't have the equipment (nor would I want it) to test if it's really f1.9 wide open, but I do know that f2 metered from another lens and this one give me the same reading and there is aperture blade movement between f2 and f1.9.
