Does anyone know just how long the old 28mm Elmarit-m (version 3) is?... and does it have a focus tab? I keep hearing that this lens is a bit of a monster by Leica M stds. Does anyone have this lens? How does it perform?
Thanks
Thanks

It is a bit larger than the 50mm Summicron measuring approx. 3 in. long. Mine does have a focus tab.
It is an excellent performer but I wouldn't say it is monster sized..

Ron, I have one. And yes, it's relatively big, but then, it's a very remarkable lens (no flare, internal reflections or anything). Mine has a focus tab (part of it broke or fell off... my copy is a bit cosmetically challenged) and a nicely loose focusing ring. So is the aperture ring, loose enough to set quickly.
The only thing I never liked is the hood. Mine came with a cracked hood, so I found an alternate (just in case). That's not the problem. It simply sticks in the viewfinder and it's solid, has no windows to see through. For a while I found it annoying, but quickly got used to it.
Now, I intend to sell it as soon as I find a nicely priced Summicron 28.
As for size, compared to the camera body, get a load of this!

I have one, love it but ... it looks ugly. The "nose" of this lens (especially with the hood) is somehow arkward big. On the other hand, the original hood is a good protection (in the always crowded subways here in Japan) but also covers pretty much of the frame ... The focus tab is really big and the focus ring a little stiff. I have some example photos taken with this lens on my flickr page.

Woah, three inches you say?! Can you check that again? I can't imagine it's literally 3 inches from the camera flange (mount) to the nose... really?

The 2.8 Elmarit (pre '74) with 48mm thread is about 3" long in the g bag but is shorter on the body, it has a focus tab with an infinity lock I think...
Same lens?

I had the v1 and v2 and both were about 3 inches. Both had focusing tabs as well. The v1 was not a great lens and the v2 was an improvement but very lack luster in performance. I like my 28 Ultron much better than either.

I was referring to overall length.
One version which won't work on the M5, M6, or CL because of the extended rear element is a bit longer.

V3 is considered an excellent lens, the V4 is even better. The V3 front dia 49mm, the V4 dia 46mm. The V4 has a fairly big shade, the lens being almost the size of my 50mm Summilux. The V4 shade has a window. V4 is an outstanding performer bar none.
I find the V4 to balance well with either of my M cameras.

I have the Elmarit 28mm f2.8 Canada lens with lens hood with missing lens hood cap. My question is:
Where can I buy the lens hood cap? Thanks.

Does the Elmarit 28mm f2.8 Canadian version obstruct the viewfinder? I used to have a Voiglander Nokton and I sold it because it was too long and I was not able to see the right bottom quarter. Does the Elmarit Canadian version have the same problem?

Of course it does. It is huge lens and not sexy without hood. Sold due to annoying 28 frame blockage. It is external VF lens with incredibly good rendering on bw dr prints.
I have Ultron 28 1.9,it isn’t small, nothing special, but it is F1.9 and better build.

It's all personal preference but the 28 Elmarit-M v4 is a wonderful lens and can be fitted with the 35mm Summilux asph hood. It is the E46 version.
This lens is not as high contrast as the asph version; it is solid metal construction with beautiful rendering, flat field and low distortion -everything you might want in a 28. Price is right also. If it obstructs the finder, it is not significant and has never impeded my using it.

I have the 4th version, 46mm filters. Overall length is a little less than 2", from flange to end is 1 1/2". Not counting the focusing tab diameter is about 1 3/4". A small, superb lens that is probably one of the cheapest M lenses. It doesn't obstruct the VF and the proper hood (square) has a cut out for the VF.
