Hi,

As I've recently converted to digital, I need to get a standard wide, as my existing 35mm has now become a 50 due to sensor sizes.

Can anyone recommend a CHEAP 28mm?

Many thanks in advance

Raid has a Canon 28/3.5 LTM lens in chrome for sale in the classifieds right now. This is a great lens -- sharp, extremely compact, solid brass construction, doesn't really need a hood and it's medium-contrast which helps on a digital sensor in high-contrast lighting situations. Jimmy Koh (www.kohscamera.com) also has one for sale in the later black/chrome barrel -- same optics, lighter alloy construction, less compact. (I already have one in black/chrome, or I'd be jumping on Raid's lens.)

Cheers,
Ari

Sounds like the CV offerings are well respected. People love the CV 3.5, and the 2.0 has been getting rave reviews too. I've read positive things about the Zeiss 28mm as well. The two Leica offerings seem to be great though more expensive, though the Leica 2.8 is a 'bargain' in Leica terms.

Sounds like any of the new offerings in 28mm are quite nice. Probably the 'smart' purchases are the Zeiss or one of the two CV's.

Whoops, I missed the CHEAP part. Go for the CV 3.5. The Zeiss 28mm shows up used from time to time for 500-600, so that could be a good buy too.

I like my CV Ultron 28/2.0 on my M8. (<$600) Cheaper is the Ultron 1.9 (<$400), too, and easier to code via LTM adapter (look up John Milich on this forum). The slower CV is supposed to be very good, too.

I don't know about your speed considerations, but I really like my recently acquired CV 28/3.5. Solid construction, extremely compact, easy to use, and a very fine performer. Used runs about $250, plus ltm-m adapter.

Another vote for the CV 28/3.5 if you don't need the speed of faster lenses.
I love the build of this lens.

Another option that a little faster and more expensive is the hexanon 28/2.8.

It depends on what you mean by 'cheap' and where you tend to shoot.

If you mean by cheap under 600$, and you want a new lens, I would stick with the CV 28s.

Presuming this to be the case, if you want small, shoot mostly in daylight, not in lowlight, then I'd get the 28/3,5 from CV.

But if you want to be able to shoot in lowlight, the 28/1,9 or 28/2 CVs are your best options. Both are great performers, yet the 28/2 has the slightly smaller size. But because you write you want "CHEAP", I would recommend you buy the CV 28/1,9. It would save you a couple hundred. That said, I do prefer the 28/2's rendering...but look at the M-mount group on flickr to view image samples and decide which you prefer.

On film, from what I have read and seen, the 28/2 has shown no focus shifting; but on the M8 it has shown some, according to Reid's Reviews. FWIW, I think the 28/2 CV and Leica 28/2 both have wonderful rendering in the center, being very close in performance at the image edging. But don't get the 28/2 as it is not the cheapest, lowlight CV 28.

Thanks everyone!

Firstly, yes I probably will buy a new lens as opposed to a used, although I'm open to suggestions on both fronts.

I couldn't find Raid's Canon one in the classifieds, is it hidden within another sale?

The Ultron 2.0 and 1.9 have certainly caught my attention and is noted as a contender, does anyone know how you get these coded or what filter thread sizes they are by chance?

The 28/1.9 is an LTM, so you could buy an adapter from John Milich–he sells ltm adapters with pits milled in them for self-coding. I don't know the filter size of this one–check cameraquest.com

The 28/2.0 has a little depression in the mount, which you can code durably by hand. If you wan this one with pits milled, you'll need to take off the flange and mail it to john milich. This is a 46 filter size.
