28 Summicron & .58

How much does the 28 cron shade intrude into the .58?

I often have to take off the shade on the .72 to do critical work with the 28 cron.

There really is *rarely* a good deal on a .58 so before I go hunting, I was just wondering how much of an improvement the .58 really is?

Keep in mind that I am aware of the partial solution of the shade for the 35 1.4 and are looking for an alternative. This is not a hobby thing, these are working cameras and lenses.

The lens is coated so well I would just take the hood of when things are critical and not worry about flare. Anyway I find the 28 frames to not be very accurate.

Would the 28mm frame lines on the .72 be more accurate?

I don't worry about flare so much as the proctection that the hood gives me. Today, I was shooting all day out in a snowstorm in a ski area. There were times I took the hood off for framing, but started to get more snow on the lens.

I am really just trying to raltionalize if I can get by with the .72 or if I should just splurge and get a second M in a .58. On shoots like today, I would just bring the .72 anyway as only one body can go.

I'm sure if the price is ever right, I will jump on it.

The 0.58X finder Ms are more comfortable to use with 28mm lenses, but the lens hood actually takes up the same amount of the 28mm frame area as it does in the 0.72X finder. I just tried it on my two M7s, and at infinity the 28mm/2 with hood reaches the bottom line of the 90mm frame on both types of finder. More of the hood actually shows in the 0.58X finder, due to it's wider view, but I think the advantage of seeing more of the world around the 28mm framelines in the other 3 corners helps me with composition.

With the 28mm Summicron, the hood is only useful preventing flare in situations where strong light is coming in toward the side of the lens, but outside the picture area. In this kind of sidelight situation the lens is quite vulnerable to forming a huge flare patch that covers the central portion of the image. It's rare but makes the negative impossible to print well. The 28mm Summicron is a great low light lens, and is remarkably small for its speed.

The new 28mm/2.8 Elmarit M ASPH is much tinier and even more flare resistant, with smoother OOF (out of focus) rendition, but it's an f/2.8, and is not as sharp at the focus point as the Summicron until f/8 or so. It hardly takes up any of the finder in comparison to all other 28mm M mount lenses. It's my favorite daylight lens or tripod mounted night photo lens.

I have a .58 and a 0.72, and I seem to be use the .58 a lot more. I'm sure this has to do with not owning any lens longer than the 50mm Lux. For 28mm I find the .58 to be a better choice, since I can actually see the framelines.

Like SDK, I just remove the hood most of the time. I guess the problem with the .58 is to actually find one at a reasonable price.

That said, I'm selling my .58 the minute I can get my hand on the new Voigtlander (R4M) 😀

Thanks everyone. Like I said in an ealier post, often the hood is needed for protection against impact, bustling crowds, rain and snow. It's just the way it is in my line of work. I would not have lasted an hour yesterday without it.

As much as I loved how the .72 worked with the 35 cron, I just don't see in 35 like I do 28. I guess I don't really have a problem seeing the framelines for the 28 on the .72 either. So this would be my only pet peeve with shooting this particular combo of RF. I have no choice, the work has got to get done, it has to be Leica and one of the lenses has to be a single 28/2, not a 28 /2.8.

I'll just keep working with it, the images are stunning.

That image on your home page for the Kodachrome project is superb. I could'nt get any farther than the home page though and would love to see more.

You might search for David T Page on the forum. he lives two miles form me and brought his .85 and summicron 28 to the studio. He's a member here and would be glad to give you info if you PM him. I don't think he uses much other than that combo.

As to frame accuracy i can't say. I don't feel the 28 frames on my M6 .72 are very accurate and have a CV finder whan I use it. The CV finder is better IMO. The .58 could be better but David would be the one to answer that.

As to your question, I'm more comfortable using a 28 on the .58 finder as it has a bit of 'breathing space' around it. Even without glasses, the 28 frames on a .72 finder seem cramped to me.

The shade I like to use is the Contax G series 46mm screw in shade with a press on lens cap. I used one on my 35 Asph. Summilux and it offers good 'bang and bump' protection and doesn't block the finder like the Leica shade does.

If you open the other eye you may see the guy or vehicle close from you left in time. It also improves the corners of the frame and the hood cut off. It is a perception problem like juggling but easier to do it you try it.

P.S. I also use the 'g' hood but it will aslo work with a generic 55mm clip in - the clip in is faster, stick a tag on the clip in to avoid photographs of it though.

I use the 28 Summicron with my M6 .58 camera, so I really could not answer this question, but in my opinion, the .58 cameras are made for 35 and 28 focal lengths. Like you, KM, I have struggled getting comfortable with the 35 focal length. In fact, I am using my 35 Summicron ASPH more than ever these days to "force" myself to see 35. I never want to sell equipment because it always causes regrets, but if I cannot learn to see 35, I probably will sell the Summicron.

Try a .58 camera if at all possible; it has helped me quite a bit. The 28 Summicron is probably my favorite Leica lens; although, I did shoot Don's 50 ASPH, and now I want one. KM, I am a 28 and 50 guy like you. I use the hood occasionally with the 28 Summicron, but more as a measure of lens protection. I don't find that this lens has flare issues, although any lens can flare.

If you divide the rangefinder rectangle into 9 sections, the hood blocks ALL of the bottom right section (horizontal orientation); just the tiniest blockage w/o the hood.

KM, I should add that I do not find the lens hood blockage with the .58 camera objectionable except in the most critical situations. For those occasions, you can always remove the hood and have only the slightest intrusion.

I am on a commercial shoot out of town for a week, I hope to get the text page and a few more images to my web guy from my hotel, but this shoot could be really long days, so it might not be until next week.
