How compact? To me compact is little to no finder blockage. What's your definition?
Leica or can it be other brands?

Basically there are so many options, so we need more information or everyone will just tell you their favourite 28 or 35mm lens.

Where are two small ones for 28. Leica ASPH 28 2.8 Elmarit-M and Viogtlander LTM 28 3.5 Color Skopar.

I quit from 28mm. I'm not good at getting right in-front of people whom I don't know and trying to frame all of the space around them.

1st Version of the 28/2.8 ASPH is really compact. The older Voigtlander 28/3.5 is great too. The Voigtlander 35/2.5 and any of the older Leica Summarons or Summicrons.

Taking you at your word, you can't get more compact than the new (or old!) 28 mm f5.6.

In 35mm (I don't do 28mm) consider in ascending price;
Voigtlander 2.5/35 colour skopar
Zeiss 2.8/35 c-biogon
Leica 2.8/35 summaron
Leica 2/35 summicron (non aspherical)
Leica 1.5/35 summilux pre-asph

All are compact, and all will give a quality file. The newer ones will render more modern, the older ones more classical.
Search your shortlist on Flickr or similar and see what you like the look of and jump in. Good luck.
