Hi there...

does anyone have any info on the characteristics of the ZI 28/2.8 v. the new Elmarit 28/2.8? I'm drawn to the Elmarit for the small size and quality, but the ZI is 2/3 the price...

By the way, I've got a CV Ultron 28, so am I wasting my time thinking about this at all???

I don`t have biogon 28mm though I have other ZM biogons and I have elmarit 28/2.8, all of them are amazing, yet I have to shoot more with elmarit to tell you what I think about it, from test shots I took I love it, in a same way that I love 25 biogon...

Sean Reid actually chose the Ultron over the 28 `Cron (let alone the Elmarit!) so it may be worth thinking if you`re doing the right thing.. from experience, the Ultron is a lowish contrast lens (which Sean likes as it extends DR and Contrast can be punched up in PP) the Cron (never used the Elmarit) is definately more punchy..

I`ts a lot of cash to lay out for a lens which is a stop and a third slower but if you`re not using the F1.9 (I am and wishing it was 1.4 at the moment!) then it`s a relatively big lens to have stuck on the cam

Ultron Wide open handheld in a Cathedral in low light - I know you have one but if you take shots like this, you`ll not be able to do it with an Elmarit without resorting to ISO1600 or a Tripod . the Blobs aren`t Flare, it was spotlights

that cv 28/1.9 is damn sharp. save your money for another lens or body.

and just to be a stickler...zi usually refers to the body and zm to the lens.

thanks for the feedback... you just saved me a lot of dosh :)

I like your organ shot, Adam - I tend to use the 21 Elmarit for that sort of situation, but I should definitely get out more with the Ultron!

Joe - thanks for the tip re the name.

My main consideration is that, after getting the 40mm Rokkor, I've fallen for the idea of small, light lenses. I hardly ever use 28mm though, and I think the size and weight is part of the reason. Still, as they say, I should get a life and get out more! At least til I've paid off my credit card - then who knows what might happen :D

I`m having the same deliberations about 50mm lenses - on the one hand I use fast lenses wide open and HAVE to and a 1.5 is likely to be used at 1.5 most of the time, on the other hand I already have the Nikon 50mm F1.4D which is usable wide open even if it maybe not as good as the CV nocton and I have 10Mp at my disposal with that (on the work cams) ..

That the probelm with new systems, picking your way through what you need.. I may let my mint boxed 90 APO Lanthar go which although is totally insanely tack sharp wide open, it`s not a focal length I`m using on the RF - especially as I have the also tack sharp Nikon 85mm F1.8D on the D200 .. hmmmmm
