I wonder if there will be any problems to use the Summaron on a M2 if you detach the goggles? Someone pointed out that the frames will still show 50mm... Is this correct? And if so couldn't you use a electric tape to force to show 35mm? Or just go with the whole VF...

Yes. The focussing cam is designed to compensate for the goggles. If you remove the goggles the focussing is incorrect (except for infinity) There was a version where the goggles were removable, and that one locks at infinity when the goggles are removed. However, it is great to use on any M camera with the goggles on. A very nice lens btw. one of my favorites in my stable for "nostalgia" look.

Yes, but user-removable with a large milled screw on the top? The only thing I could come up with is to make it easier to stow in a camera-case, but that would be pretty far-fetched.

The lens alone can still be scale-focussed.

on my version the lens cannot be scale focused, the scale (removable goggles) is calibrated to the goggles, without the goggles the distance is incorrect by a couple feet. It can be used at infinity though, kinda like a point and shoot, good for street, it's quick and dirty 🙂

Todd, thanks for that correction. I've never had such a lens and was passing along what I've read. It's amazing the amount of confusion regarding this googled lens there is out there!

't Ain't a bad lens at all, especially for low-contrast subjects.

Ok, thank you for the answers. Is it hard to adjust those goggles? I saw one ad and they were out of focus or something...it was pretty cheap, I think, $230 or so...in good shape beside this fault.

I think it may be a better option to go with the LTM Summaron + adapter.

The goggles can be a pain if you're using a case (not the original Leica case for the M3/M2). I tried this this week with a goggled 35 Summicron and a goggled 35 Summaron.

I highly recommend you try them out yourself first. Handling them first makes a huge difference in helping you determine if it's right for you or not. If the image is really what you're after, then that doesn't have any bearing, of course.

Good luck!

Hmmm....hadn't even thought of trying my new (to me) bugeyed 'cron on the M6. I'll have to do a few test shots and see how an 8-element bugeyed 'cron does against a version III 6-element. I just tried mtg it and the field of view is the same; the 35mm framelines with the V3 have the same field of view as the 50mm framelines that come up when the goggled 'cron is mounted.

I think there is a misunderstanding here. The lens without the goggles can indeed be used by scale focusing. The rangefinder will not agree with the scale but the lens focus is definitely matched to the scale. I have a f3.5 Summaron that I used for a couple of years without goggles, until I found a set of goggles for it. It worked just fine by scale focusing, but was off by quite a bit from the rangefinder indication, so you cannot use the rangefinder for focusing, only for viewing.
