well I have owned a 35/1.5 for the last 16 years, its not as contrasy as the 35/2, which is similar to the CV 35/1.7 which is amazing really, the Canon 35/2 came out in 1962 and the CV lens only a few years ago, the 35/2 still delivers a bit better colours (with colour film ) IMHO. But getting back to the 35/1.5, it is like the Canon 35/2.8 in contrast, at larger apertures, and almost 2 stops faster, it is very close to the look (bokeh too) you get with the Canon 50/1.4 at full bore. If you like that old timey look to your photos Joe, you can't better than the 35/1.5 for a hi-speed 35mm lens, IMHO, not a common lens, but one that is a little under rated and not mentioned very much. may be thats good, as the price would be much higher if people knew how good it is.

facinating!
my only prior info is from sean reid's rd-1 article and the 1.5 came off looking pretty poor in that.
it seems i will be saving for and getting at least one more 35 mm lens.

my 35/2 may need a cleaning (tho it looks fine) as it seems less contrasty than my 35/2.8 lens.
i did some shots and posted them here last summer, i think, and the 2.8 had the look i liked the best of the lot. and it also feels the best size wise.
i'm looking forward to using this tiny 3.5 for that reason too.

joe

if you like the look in the photos you get with the 35/2.8 , you will like the 35/ 1.5 if you have use for a high speed 35mm. the 35/1.5 is a good match up to the Canon 50/1.4 and compliments it very well, both came out in the late 1950s and they both give that " look" to the photos esp. B & W photos. a different look than a truely modern high speed lens. with multi coatings & aspherical elements. think of Life magazine, circa 1959 and some of their indoor avilable light spreads, thats the look I mean.

now i'm gettin' excited!
damn! i won't be able to get one for awhile but it's fun knowing that the 35mm lens quest is not yet over.

i just traded my 50/1.4 for the 50/1.5 but i have not seen any results yet.
gotta get my a** in gear pdq.

joe

I know you only use Canon lenses on your Canons Joe, but one of my all time favorite 35mm lens is the 35mm/2.5 Nikkor IMHO , nice OOF areas, compact, good old fashion type contrast, not too slow, a joy to use , I think there are some examples of this lens in use in my gallery.

oh, this summer, I found the proper lens hood for the 35/1.5 at a Cash Converter Store in Missisauga Ontario, for the princely sum of five dollar Canadian !! + PST & GST .

sweet!

it's funny as i'm a stickler for some things and not others.
i like the 40mm hoods from cq and use them when i can.

i just bought 2 hoods on ebay tho i only wanted one. (it was both or nothing)
i got a hood for my soon to arrive 135/35 and one for the 50/1.4 which i will put up for sale when they arrive.

my 35/2.8 has the cutest hood from leica but it fits and works great. it fits the 3.5 too.

in truth, i think i'm done with the bodies except for a 6l, someday.

i would like to 'collect' the 1.5 and the 3.2, but the price would have to be just right. other than for the sake of collecting i'm not sure what they might offer me.

joe

Sir I thought you were at one with your gear. Can one have GAS and still be at one with their gear? :D

Congrats on the new lens BTW.
