35-50mm FL - which is bokeh king ?

Actually, a photograph to someone talented enough to actually "see" the image in totality is far different than most people I know who glance at any, and I do mean, any image as if it were a snapshot and never notice OOF or composition or anything other than the fact that: "Yeah, that's George in front of the boat at the marina...he sure looks fat now...."😱 Ask them later, and they have no idea whether the background was OOF or not.

While, personally, I have always had a little artitstic talent, and I was always aware of photographs with OOF and shallow DOF, I never thought much about it until the last year or so. Since then, I have become fascinated with learning more about bokeh in order to make my images better. Kind of closing the loop, I suppose.

Here is some serious bokeh:

BTW, I am not out to bokeyfi everything unless it's happy hour and Guinness is flowing freely! 😉

I think that in the 35 to 75mm range, the 35/2 pre-asph, 35/1.4 ASPH, 50/1.4 pre-asph and 75/1.4 are pretty hard to beat. As far as I am concerned, the 75/1.4 is the best hands down. It has beautiful bokeh...pretty much always.

Here are a few from the 35/1.4 ASPH

Sorry to overload the thread, but I am passionate about my lenses....the 35/1.4 ASPH and 75/1.4 are just fantastic.

Another "vote", as it were, for M-Hexanon glass. The OOF qualitites of the glass, thankfully, don't overshadow other virtues, but the balance is there. I think the beauty of a really good lens is in the lack of rude surprises when used at its extremes.

I like the M-Hexanon lenses as well. Many have sung the virtues of the 50, but I've really enjoyed the M-Hexanon 35/2 as well. To try to stay 'on topic' I tried to come up with some samples that might demonstrate its bokeh, but find that I don't seem to have anything that might push the boundaries in that regard. Still, here are a few:

(That last shot is probably not at f2, but I thought I should show at least one photo not taken in a bar 😱 )

I'm not sure that the OOF areas of the 35 stand up as well as the 50, but the lens still works well for me.

I agree. Here's a (not particularly interesting) shot showing the very gentle bokeh of the Hexanon 35mm.
