35-70 zoom blues

I have decided to sell off my Contax G collection. I have been doing so much digital that I can't justify keeping such a good player on the bench. However, my first attempt to effect this plan failed when my auction of a 25-70 zoom on ebay failed to attract a bidder.

I suspect that one major reason for this was the fact that I felt obligated to disclose that when you put a filter on this lens the ring that holds the filter moves when the filter is fully on. Since the lens works very well in all respects, I opined that this might have been intended as a way of preventing overenthusiastic wrists from overtightening filters. Yet, since I was not able to document this, I disclosed and the rest is history.

Question, does anyone else have a 35-70 that does the same thing with filters? Does anyone know if my hypothesis is correct and whether the phenomenon I described is normal? If not, any theories on what the matter might be?

Don't know about the filter ring, but IMHO the 35-70 zoom is not that desireable 🙂

OTOH over at the contaxg pages someone looked for a 35-70 a couple of weeks ago.

You may have better luck selling it there

Weird. The 35-70 is a little exotic and therefore would be a little low on the reale value. What is in your kit?

I've got one G2 and one G1 body with 28, 35, 45, 90 amd 35-70mm lenses, the 140 flash and one flash that is bigger than the 200. In a sense, the 35-70 is the critical first step because I won't sell the G2 before it goes so I don't wind up with a lens I can't use.

I posted nearly the identical inquiry that started this thread on Gandy's rangefinder site and got this response:

I confess I hadn't read it, but it sure was a relief to see that the lens did not have a defect!

Alan,

Yes and Yes to both your points. It is done to protect the lens and it says so somewhere in one of the Contax booklets. The same thing happens when you put the lens hood on and try to cap it: the metal cap must be placed clockwise (when facing the lens) in order to prevent rotation. It soon becomes second nature and the zoom is great IMHO.

All your contax g lenses can be modifyed to manual focus and used on an EOS. I spoke with someone over at Zoerk that know who does this modification.

I currently use a 35-70 Non G on my 1DSII and the results are stunning.

Thanks for your inquiry. I have declared a Holiday Season moratorium on my selling efforts. I am finishing up a "Digital Darkroom" course at Maryland Institute and work has been pretty demanding of late.....these combined with the normal rough and tumble of the crowds trying to get to the cashier ahead of me in the stores!!!

Nope. Nada. Can't be done🙂

I use C/Y mounts on my Olympus E-1 (www.cameraquest.com) via an adapter. Now, you could take a G lens, convert it to LTM ($550) then use an LTM > M adapter ($75) and then use an M > SLR adapter ($175), and you end up with a Macro G lens🙂 All for $800 per lens. Ouch. And no infinity.

The G lens just has no room for the aaption, heck, I believe there is less room to work with than an M.

So, C/Y yes, G no.

For Contax/Yashica mount SLR lenses, not to be confused with Contax G mount. Crashing an SLR mirror into a Biogon rear element is pricey 🙂

I still have my Contax SLRs and lenses, and if Kyocera had either a dSLR for C/Y mount or a better N digital and two more primes I'd stick with them. But now I'm happy with my Canon D60 and the Contax SLR gear collects dust on a bookshelf. Used the 167MT twice this year and shot four rolls :-(

The G2 might follow this fate.
When I have my tax return in february I'll have more than a look on a R-D1 with 21 and 28 🙂
