35 Summicron prices are now officially "insane"

so what you are saying is when I paid $1500 for a 35 Summicron ASPH and an M6 body, it was a good deal? 😛

No, a great one. 😱

Did you get a Rollecks watch from the same seller? 😀

So.. the russian writing on the lens is a bad sign?

Actually, I got it through my work. My boss knew I had been lusting after a Leica for years, so he gave me an awesome deal on one. He bought a whole system of stuff. 4 M bodies, 5 lenses, 5 R bodies, 9 R lenses. Not to mention a TON of Contax stuff as well. So yea. I got a sweet deal!

So you'd think listening to some of our customers! I'm one of those people that can see the virtue in both 😉

Though to be honest. Most of your typical film cameras have dropped in price a lot. The only people that ever ask for them are students and they aren't willing to spend more than $125-150 for a camera so yea. Makes it great for those that want a nice film camera or lens though! 😉 We stopped carrying film cameras new because we couldn't get rid of the damn things. Now we only carry digital cameras new.

Yikes!

Yikes!

Yeah. I need a new boss. 😉

Chris, that is a phenomenal deal.

Is your boss sort of jolly, dresses in red and has an entourage of reindeers? 😉

No red hat, but I suppose you could call him Jolly when he is shooting pretty landscape photos and such! 😛

Agreed. The pre-asph Summilux 50 is perhaps my favorite lens and it has precisely those qualities. But it's better at f1.4 than the Summicron 35 is at f2.0. It is also supremely resistant to flare, unlike the Summicron, which makes it more useable in difficult lighting situations. And more to the point, it is priced reasonably on the used market relative to its performance. It doesn't sell, as the 35 Summicron does, for almost as much as its Aspherical replacement.
My empirical tests/observations confirm your observations of the 50 Summilux pre-asph and the 35 Summicron pre-asph(s). I thought my 35 Summicron first version (the 8-element one) handled flare slightly worse, but I attribute that to a little bit of haze in it -- it is at DAG, and I'm now impatiently waiting for it (it'll be two months soon)

I think Mr. Boo-ke Reviewer did us users a disservice by coining the caustic "King of Bokeh" label and slapping it to the 35 'cron IV; it shot prices unreasonably high.

It's a good thing that the 50mm Summilux pre-asph isn't considered a "sharp" lens, and a "not-so-good" performer --bah humbug--, for that and the arrival of the clinical ASPH lens have kept the prices relatively reasonable.

Want to start a "my 35 Summicron renders my pictures purple" campaign, so that prices plummet? 😀

Is your 1st 8 element just getting a CLA or getting the goggles removed as well?
😀 -- maybe it is, maybe it's not. I was advised not to. I weighed the pros & cons, and the pros won.

Re: the 40mm Nokton; I've seen many good images taken with it, but sometimes I just shudder. It's not a brand issue either (I have the 35 Ultron and love it...and I think that its bokeh is better than the 35 'cron, wide open, at any distance), for I shudder the same way with some fourth-version 50mm Summicron shots wide open in low light --I've made my 50 'cron a daytime lens, that's when it shines without question.

Will do, Tom. I am eager as well. I am waiting on four things now (two rangefinders, one Polaroid, and one lens); if they all arrive by Christmas week, I'll be as happy as a little...err...I'll be happy 😉

I will post shots and report salivations as soon as I get it.

Chris: Just enjoy what you got and don't rub it in. 🙄

Tom, my Nokton's at DAG right now to fix the stiff focus problem I had, but I've seen nothing in the shooting I've done with it so far that qualifies as 'ugly.' It seems a great all-round lens with no major flaws and a darn good value for the money.

I do plan to shoot with it under more demanding conditions when it gets back... 😀
