35 Summilux pre-asph identification question

Hi Tom,

I have a black 35 Summilux pre-asph that appears to be v1 (infinity lock, filter threads) but dates from 1967 (SN 2,347,xxx). These things don't seem to go together. Am I working from incorrect data, perhaps?

In any case, it works for me!

Thanks for the help.

Mine has the infinity lock and is serial# 2221xxx.

Edit: Mine does not have filter threads. The filters (series 7) go in the lens hood.

Filter threads with a 35/1.4 Summilux-M pre-ASPH that is not the chrome ring version? That would be very interesting!

It could be a lens that was repaired in the past with parts from different generations. For the most part, all the lenses with infinity lock, be they Version I or early Version II will completely interchange 100% of their parts.
I know of a Version II "Panda" 35 Summilux out there which was cobbled together from black and chrome parts lenses.

I suspect that it has been repaired at some time. The filter threads indicate that. As to the serial number - Leica was a bit "lax" with those. They assigned blocks of numbers and used them up - even when the lens model was later than the number indicated. At one time I had a Summicron 90mm f2 - the "new" compact version from 1980 (with the hood that slid over the aperture ring) which had a 1976 serial number on it!
The key is that it works well and that you like it!

Thanks, guys. I do like it: a lot. It's just right for my style wide-open.

I suspect that it has indeed been repaired, that certainly makes the most sense. When there's a little more light in here (what a grim day) I'll get some snaps and post them for your perusal.

I just phoned with the responsible person of the Okamura Akihiko exhibition (at The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, until September 23rd) where they have his BP M4 with 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH SN# 234xxxx (infinity-lock) with a screw-in UV filter on display. He confirmed that the filter is indeed a normal screw-in type and that the lens has a filter-thread but could not tell me if the filter-thread was later added by Okamura-san.

A photo of his cameras (with that lens) can be found here:
