35mm film & Polaroids thru Security Gate... should I bother?

Hi all 🙂

I have a bunch of unused rolls of film laying around. I never used them because I accidentally left them in my bag when passing it thru the X-Ray machine at an airport.

Are they pretty much useless now? No way of them somehow surviving the trip thru the X-Ray?

Theyre color negatives and I certainly dont know how to develop those, but I'd hate to take a chance, try getting some good shots out of them, and end up with a "blank" roll.

What to do? 🙁

They're probably fine. I've sent ASA1600 without ill effects. Why don't you shoot a roll to find out what damage may have occurred?

The film should be fine. I still run ISO 400 speed 35mm film through multiple security gates in Europe and Africa, with no problems to date (crossed fingers). Even if overexposed to X-ray, it wouldn't be blank when developed but would show weird splotches of light.

I've run up to 800 film (never tried higher) through multiple airports without ever having an issue, never bothered with lead bags or hand inspections.

oh wow, really? thats a relief! im glad i never threw them out then. theyre probably expired by now, but whatever hahaha 🙂

I remember Kodak published the effects of running film through certain xray machines that handle the checked-in baggage. Most airports I've been through say their carry-on xray machines will no affect film up to 800ISO.

If it's the carryon machine you're talking about, you are almost certainly fine.

If it's the machine used to scan checked luggage, maybe you're fine and maybe you're not. Shoot a roll of the film and see what happens.

Not to opena new thread, how long after the expiration date is the film still usable and to what degree?

I have 8 or 9 rolls of Kodak FarbWelt 200 Klassik Film ISO 200/24', that is dated 12/2004.. are those still any good?
