35mm lens on an R3A?

Hi All,

I really fancy an R3A.
I particularly like it's ergonomics and the 1:1 viewfinder.

On my Hexar RF, I shoot 50mm mainly, but also use 35mm quite often these days.

My question is. Can you get away with a 35mm lens on the R3A?
Given that it falls just outside the 40mm frame lines is the entire viewfinder the 35mm area?

With the Hexar I know that the viewfinder is pretty much 28mm.
Would the lack of parallax corrected frame lines cause me problems.

In short- should I get an R2A instead?
(I'd be keeping the Hex)

Hi Bob, i have an R3A and use my 35mm lens on it most of the time.
If you dont wear glasses, the entire viewfinder seems to be pretty close to a 35mm field of view. Well it has for me so far.

With my eye right up tight to the vf, there is hardly any extra space around the 40 framelines, I m not sure what I can see would be equivalent to 35. although probably niot far off.

the size of 'the entire vf' seems to depend on how close you can squish your eye to the glass, its not easy to see the edges of the window. I guess it would be better to just use the 40 lines and mentally compensate for a bit more room (which might be possible with both eyes open), instead of pushing the limits of eyesocket - camera relationship.

The 1:1 is rad, its so good to have both eyes open. Could you try looking through the vf of one ata camnera shop? I rekon that would be the best way to decide if you could get away with it.

Perhaps use the hex for the 35s, and use 50s on the r3. (or get a 40!) BTW shooting 50 on the r3a is fantastic, I can't emphasise that enough. I have yet to aquire a 40.. or 75..

Yeah i've heard some people say they cant see the 40mm frameline easily, or the area aroung them. For some reason i can see them very easily and a fair bit of space around. I wonder how close my eye is to the VF 😕
But yes i agree, the 50mm is absolutely terrific on the R3A 🙂

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I do wear glasses, so I suppose it could be an issue. Although I keep meaning to start using my contact lenses more often when shooting. I suspect they could be extra useful when shooting with both eyes open (which will take practice!)

I did think that the 35mm on the Hexar and a 50mm on the R3A could be a pretty neat 2 body combo. 😎
