35mm Summicron lens hood ?

Curious to know how many of you use your 35mm Summicron hoods all the time.

I've got an Asph version. Without the hood it is as compact as my current 50mm elmar collapsed & doesn't intrude at all into the 35mm framelines - (and I can use the push on elmar lens cap as well). I would imagine that an earlier version 'cron is even more compact without the hood.

I know, I know - for the absolute best performance always use a hood, the hood protects the lens, etc., etc., - but it's just so much more compact without that hood.

I briefly had a 4th version 35 Summicron, it flared to one degree or another with light sources anywhere in front of me without the hood. I found the plastic hood irritating in that it blocked the viewfinder so I used the vented one off my 3rd generation Cron and found that it reduced the flare better too. (Eventually I sold the lens because it was no different in performance than my 3rd version and I could get more money for the type 4 because of the internet hype). Sorry I can't speak for the ASPH as I never had the inclination to shell out for one of those.

A yellow filter and square hood is on mine all the time. Best not to take them off. It does defeat the compact argument, but that isn't really important to me.

What Rover said, the lens is still small enough with the standard hood, but I think a 12585 or similar would give better flare protection.

The hood on my pre-ASPH never comes off, even then I don't think the combination is too big.

My 35 and 50mms all have permanently attached doorjam filters- they also reduce flare. 🙂

Hello:

Sorry, that was too cute. I have lens hoods on my lenses to prevent damage from accidents such as bumping a lens into stationary objects such as a doorjam. I have sunshades that are battered but the lens glass and mounts are all undamaged.

I've got a couple of hoods that have become battered as well oer the years. I can only imagine what the threads and glass would look like after several years without the hood.

I guess the short answer to the "hood or not to hood" question is...hood.
