I have a few newer test shots taken with my 35mm Summicron f/2, first version (aka 8-element) lens; the one with goggles (which is on its way to DAG).

Although it has some slight fogging, I didn't see any serious flare effects. I'll post more samples later, but I'd also like to see other people's shots with all different versions.

Here we go!

Again, but embedded.

Stopped down to f/2.8 or f/4:

The rest are wide open:

(the film is Kodak HD 200)

This is from the pre-asph IV version (this should bring Magus out of the woodwork 😉 ). I believe it was f4.0.

And one shot wide open at close range:

Wouldn't it be nice to have a place to archive all of these different M-Mount lens types 😀 ?

Those are great, Honus.

One question: does your copy also look like it may be slightly stopped-down when set to f/2? Apparently, this is how 35 'cron IV are "supposed to be".

Bleh. I was going to wait till I got home, but since you're so impatient, I'll indulge you. 🙂

The following were taken with the Leica 35/2 summicron, Leitz CANADA, 4th generation, pre-aspherical:

I'll second the "great pictures" bit. FWIW my 4th version looks a bit stopped down when at f2. I have surprisingly little stuff shot with this lens. Here's a couple of so-so street shots on Superia 400.

Cool. Very nice, Crasis. Well, I am trying to make a decision about this lens (again).

How do you make those "enlarger-print" borders? Do you print them and scan them, or is this a special Photoshop action/filter?

I print them, then scan them. So they are actually a result of a very crappily filed negative carrier.

But with great character...

It's quite easy to do in Photoshop, you surround the image with a black border and then nibble away at it with the eraser set to a middling opacity. If your scans are uniform you can save the border and merge the files. It's much easier to take a file to a negative mask, though.

Thanks, Crasis.

Mark: if these are on Fuji Superia 400, then these may be stopped down to about f/5.6? Love the expression of the "cook".

OK, that was one of the things that really bothered me about the copy I had, but I didn't know it was "a feature" of the 4th version then, thanks all for the confirmation. I saw one copy of the ASPH with this "feature" and another without it.

I've had two different copies of the 8-element 'cron, and they're both completely open. I am having the one I kept modified so I won't need the goggles.

If money flow permits, in the future, I'm thinking about the ASPH, as a nice complement to the 8-element copy.

f 5.6 or f8, usual "street" apertures for me with a 35. I'm happy with the 4th, it's sharp, small, has a nice signature (IMO) and handles well. I have no idea why it's had such a bad press round here lately. Maybe it's just the hype it's received from certain sources. THIS for instance.

This is why I posted shots at f/2. I do zero sharpening and I scan from 8x10s. I only do a slight tweak to the curves with the express purpose of representing correctly the values on the print. That's it!

You can expect f/5.6 and up to be sharper and contrastier than what I've posted.. although I'd be hard pressed to tell, especially for the 3 street shots all at f/2.

Glad this lens is represented

Yes. After fumbling a deal on a nice v. 3 here and realizing that I had more than enough 35mm lenses for the time being, I squandered my 35mm Summicron budget on MF gear. 😎

Crasis: What happened to your f:2 images? Only a red "X"

Keep them coming folks!

They show up for me. I'll fix them later by putting them on a more friendly server.

Thanks for the heads up!

For now, here's another colour shot at f/5.6. Let's play a game. Spot the Joe!

Crasis,

That first shot is excellent. What film/developer combo did you use?

It looks like DeviantArt has locked out the f2.0 shots.
