Anyone else out there use a different hood than the stock one with their ASPH 'Lux? I find the stock one blocks too much of the viewfinder and is rather bulky. I got one from Heavy2Stars which is okay but not great - I don't like screw in filters. Are there any other clip on hoods, like the 35mm 'Cron's hood. I seem to remember someone saying the 28mm 'Cron's hood, #11604, fits the 35mm 'Lux? Any ideas?
Cheers.

Not sure it will help, but I have renounced to use a hood on mine. I like the smaller size combo it gives and sincerely I could not identify a picture where flare or loss of contrast resulted of it.

Do you guys use a protective UV filter? I've hot a SMC Heliopan filter for protection but have never really tried to shoot without a hood because I'm used to shooting in really harsh light here in New Zealand. That, plus my old 35mm Summicron V2 had a tiny scratch on it that made it flare like crazy when the sun got it just right. I'd imagine the UV filter wouldn't help things but I worry about scratching my once in a lifetime extravagant purchase!

I have no choice than put a UV/IR filter as I use it on the M8. I don't mind as I got no reflections and it provides protection to the glass. If I was going to a place with harsh light such as yours, I would take the hood in my bag in case of situations where I feel it could help. Note that I sometimes also use a very basic hood : my hand

My 35/1.4 asph tends to be flare-y. The hood that came with it stopped hanging on well and then broke. I bought a 12451 hood for the 28/2 Summicron and reversed the attachment part and now I use that. It stays where I put it. The lens still flares. It's been to leica twice but is apparently within normal specs.

Hey, thanks guys.
Can you explain a little about how you reversed the attachment part? I don't quite understand. Would I have to modify it to fit if I got one or does it get knocked out of place easily the way you have it?

As supplied by Leica the 12451 attaches securely to the 35/1.4 asph, but only upside down. This is a problem because the cut out that limits the amount of lens hood intrusion into the viewfinder is in the lower right corner of the lens, not the upper left corner where it needs to be. So I took a tiny screwdriver, undid the crews on the back, turned that part that mounts onto the lens 180 degrees relative to the actual hood part and screwed it back on. Works perfectly and has for ~3 years, but you do need to do the surgery unless you're happy to look at a lot of hood in the VF.
The 12451 seems to be a lot sturdier than the one that came with my 35/1.4 asph, both in terms of the actual hood and its attachment to the lens. Although designed for a wider lens, that hood seems to work fine.

After almost losing my hood a number of times, I just purchased the Heavystars hood and forgot about it.-Dick

I use the standard hood on my 35 LUX asph and never an issue. I also bought the Heavystar and carry a couple of those in case I want to switch it out. If you forgo the hood, use a multi-coated filter to avoid additional flare.

This is not correct. I used the shade designed for the 28mm Summicron on my 35mm Asph Summilux for years. It mounts either way. I preferred this shade only because I never liked that funky breach lock system on the standard 35mm Asph Summilux shade.

Curious - I've just checked and it definitely only attached securely to my 35/1.4 asph one way. The other way around it does not lock in place.

Marty: The shade clips onto the notches on the lens on either side and the shade clips are identical right-side-up and upside-down. Just hold the shade clips in, gently slide the shade onto the lens (the dot in the middle right-side-up) and let go. Don’t force it.

Just tried it, it only goes in on my lens one way. Even if I put the hood onto the groove and rotate until the clips engage, they only engage one way. This might be peculiar to my lens and hood. Whatever the case, this is an excellent hood for the 35/1.4 asph. If anyone gets this hood for their 35/1.4 asph check - the hood seems likely to just go straight on. Mine definitely does not.

Yes, curious indeed. I no longer have my 35mm Asph Summilux, so unfortunately I can't try to duplicate what you're doing. I am very familiar with the design characteristics of both lens and shade and there is no reason if it works upside-down the combination should not work right-side-up.
If you have a 28mm Asph Summicron you will see the rim is nearly identical to that of the 35mm Asph Summilux – which is why the shade works in the first place. To be honest, I have always wondered why Leica chose to use the different shade design on the 35mm Asph Summilux. The original 35mm Aspherical Summilux had the exact shade design we're dealing with - now used the 28mm Asph Summicron.
If you figure it out, please let me know.
Kindest regards, Bill

The stock shades lock really annoys me, too. I just like to unclip it like the other Leica lenses I own. I heavysay shade I got was ok but when it screws in the vent is not in the right place and ends up blocking more of my viewfinder than the original. I see the 28 crons hood is not cheap... Might have to put up with the original for the moment.
Actually, I kind of wish I had of saved my money and got the 35 Cron ASPH instead of the Lux. As I mature I find f2 more than enough and small size and ergonomics more important. The Lux is a perfect performer in my eyes, though.

I don't have a 28 Summicron for comparison.
But I've just played with my 35/1.4 asph and the 12451 hood - if I wiggle the hood carefully, the hood does go on to my lens both ways, but it definitely goes on one way more easily and stays more securely when put on that way. The side lugs (the fixed ones, not the clips at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions) on the hood appear to be slightly off the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions. I'd say this outcome is a result of my hood being slightly out of spec. If it didn't do this from brand new I'd blame rough handling on my part, but it did this from brand new. It seems to be getting easier to put it on 'upside down' the more I put it on the lens that way.
Thus, the 12451 appears to fit the 35/1.4 Summilux asph without modification. The reason I got mine in the first place was that I had the first aspherical version of the lens and preferred this hood (which as Bill points out, is identical to the one that came with the 35/1.4 aspherical, although I can't find the part number for that hood) to the 12589 that came with the asph.
The Heavystar hood doesn't shield the lens as well (it is round, rather than rectangular) which makes a difference with my lens, which seems to flare quite a bit if I don't shade it. it also protrudes into the finder more. it is, however, much cheaper than the 12451.

I bought a 12 415 hood for the 28/2 Summicron
I believe that the part number for the hood for the 28/2 ASPH is 12451.
Thanks for the info on this hood. I did not know that it fit the 35/1.4 ASPH.

How much less does the 28mm hood protrude into the viewfinder compared to the stock hood?
Thanks and sorry for the million questions!
