35mm Summilux ASPH Hood

Actually, I kind of wish I had of saved my money and got the 35 Cron ASPH instead of the Lux. As I mature I find f2 more than enough and small size and ergonomics more important. The Lux is a perfect performer in my eyes, though.

I use both, the f2 during the day and the f1.4 at night. I also prefer the way the f1.4 renders. Beautiful lens.

How much less does the 28mm hood protrude into the viewfinder compared to the stock hood?

I don't have a stock hood on hand and it's too long ago for me to remember, so I can't help comparatively.

On an M viewfinder at close focus (0.7m) the total outline of the 12451 takes up slightly less than a quarter of the viewfinder. The RF patch is clear of the hood outline, but the lower right 135 mm bracket is covered and the left side of the hood extends slightly past the centre of the VF. Of course you can see through the cut-out. Magnification doesn't make any difference - I just checked on 0.85 and 0.72 Ms - you just see more around the edges of the framelines, but the hood intrudes the same amount.

I don't have any other M cameras to check this on, sorry.

The alternative replacement hood for the 35mm Summilux ASPH is the 12547 originally for the 2.8/28mm Elmarit (4th version).

Its basically the same hood as originally supplied with the limited 35mm Summilux 'aspherical' (that's pre-ASPH to make it clear, the one with the 2 'hand-made' elements), actually doesn't fit on that lens as the pins line up is different, but fits perfectly on the Summilux ASPH lens.

Its not smaller than the stock hood that comes with the ASPH lens, but has the old style pressure side clips which make it more straight forward in use, and a solid plastic cap with clips that fits more secure and doesn't pop off as easy. Its a bit heavier plastic too and may be more durable.

That's exactly the info I need, thanks. It seems it may block a little more than the standard hood, if not the same amount.

I ended up getting the hood peter_n suggested and find it totally perfect. Really compact, blocks less of the VF than the stock hood and is really light.
Highly recommended.

Great! Actually I just bought another one myself, this time for a new 50/1.4 pre-ASPH E46 lens. I can't stand the slide-out hood on the lens and this heavystar W46 is a perfect solution. 🙂

got another 35 'lux FINALLY. didnt come with hood. i actually like the asph hood, but dotn feel like spending a hundred on it right now. i like the old school style too, so we'll see how this heavystar hood is......

the only thing i dont like about the hood is that it screws on the front of your filter. so in effect, it makes your lens longer. with some of the leica hoods, the first few mm of your lens is kinda 'inside' the hood. not a huge problem, but i do prefer for my lens to be as short as possible.

I was worried about that with the wide Heavystar hood but actually it adds about the same length to the lens as the original Leica hood. Much prefer the Heavystar option.

I like the Heavystar hood also and want to give a thumbs up to those folks. They left an item out of my order but I didn't realize it until about a week later. Contacted them, got response and apology same day and the missing item arrived two days later. First class folks.
