I have a Leica iiif and Jupiter-12. I also have an old Vario-viewfinder from Leica but it is too bulky. I need a simple and light 35mm viewfinder such as the ones from Voigthlander. I am unable to find any alternative. Could you please help me??

Get crapped out Olympus XA (2), many of them have entered this stage by now. Get plastic hot shoe cover, also available on eBay. Take out XA VF (it comes with 35 frames) and mount it on hot shoe cover.

Also, Minox 35 are cameras which entered crapped out stage even before Olympus XA.

Some non-DIY ones:
1. Yashica made tele-wide finder, usually has a frame line of 38mm.
2. KMZ or Rostov made 35mm viewfinder, no frame line, and give a view slightly wider than 35mm FOV.

The Leitz SBLOO is easy to find on eBay, a bit expensive, but it will keep its value, and it is the best 35mm finder in the world.

HI,

There was a Japanese one, sold by one of the USSR importers of old, called Helios. They often turn up on ebay and so on.

Regards, David

I asked this question a year ago. I ended up with a Sony Zeiss finder that B&H had on sale at the time for just under $200. The new Zeiss finders are among the best available, but its offset hangs it over the shutter speed dial on my IIIa. Another recommendation was the Olympus VF-1. It's now discontinued but available on Ebay for well under $100. I know nothing about the construction, although it does resemble the Leica finder.

Very nice little setup DNG, VERY NICE!

Bill, I hope you don't mind me riding the coattails of your post
(if a post can have coattails:roll eyes:)
But I agree, that's a very clean simple set up David.
Enjoy it and how about some photos from it?
The 35mm f 2.5 Nikkor has intrigued me for sometime...

Thank you both!
I have many pictures from the Standard & Elmar, but I just got the Nikkor in from Japan, and back from Youxin. It is now loaded in preparation for a road-trip later this week, so I'm hoping to see some pics too! The Nikkor is a jewel, it seems to me.

What Eric said, I've always liked this finder even on M2 & M4...particularly when street shooting. Makes for easy framing even with glasses.

Another vote for Helios, though it does have a bit of a surfeit of frame lines: 35mm, 85mm and 135mm as far as I recall. For compactness, Voigtlander's 28/35 is unbeatable but hard to find and expensive when you do. Stephen apparently has them new for $699 in chrome only.

Cheers,

R.

The Olympus VF-1 is pretty decent, lightweight plastic and available used from several sources on Amazon for under $100. It feels kinda flimsy but I used one for 2-3 years on the first Olympus M4/3 and it held up fine. It's set up for 4x3 aspect ratio so it's not an exact match for the 3x2 of 35mm frames.

I picked this one up on ebay for $30, it is called a "tele-wide" finder, 35mm and 75mm (85-90mm?) I've seen several with different markings out there. The base had to be adjusted as it was too thick to fit any shoe I had.
