35RC and crappy Fujichrome

I utterly detest Fuji color films, negative or reversal. It's just something about the color rendition. And the chromes don't keep very well, either.

That said, with today's post-processing software, one can get something decent from them.

Hmmmm all my old fujichromes from the 1980's held onto their colour very well indeed.

Never had a washed out shot like your opening one - and yes here in Ireland we do get a lot of overcast days and very dull light too - I guess then looking back on my old fuji-chromes a lot are in good sunlight and the rest are in rain or indoors. But none of them have faded.

Many that I've known don't like Fuji Color, but and maybe because it is different from Kodak. And Finglas, I had good luck with Fuji C-41 when I was in Ireland. Kodak used to say shoot color film on overcast days it performs well in that light. Maybe they were right, but probably just trying to sell more film.

I forgot to say I have a cherry Olympus 35RC, and it is my favorite (35mm) camera (non-SLR, non-Leica, non-BessaR). And that is with Fuji color, Kodak color, or B&W.

In fact, one of the great things about the 35RC is the flash to 1/500 which not many 35mm cameras have (and if they do have it they are broken and not worth fixing). So if you use outdoor flash you have the best that 35mm offers.

I consider Fuji films to be summer films, better with sunny days, high sun, bright greens and blues than with muted colors or earth tones. Kodak does better at capturing spring and fall.

That 35RC looks like a keeper, and your OOTC scan looks better color-wise than the roll of expired Kodak 400 MAX did in of the pre-processed shots from my 35LC last week.

A couple of items to clarify. The Sensia was three years out of date, and though it was cold stored, apparently it didn't age very well. Maybe I should have changed the ISO setting on the camera to 50.

I have seen good stuff done with Fuji. Your shot of the boy and dog, John, shows that. But for my experience, it just doesn't get it. Or at least it didn't used to. I've shot very little of it the last few years, and mostly OOD stuff that's been given to me. As I think about it, the last fresh roll I shot was from a disposable camera a couple of years ago. I was okay with what I got from that, so methinks my opinion is a bit clouded by all the old stuff I was using.

And since Kodak is getting harder to find in the stores, I best be getting used to the idea of having to shoot Fuji at times. And better be using up what I've got in the fridge real quick.

So much depends on the scanner and techniques you use. Best to evaluate from a projector on a nice screen.

I like Kodachrome best, then Fujichrome. Fujichrome always tended to treat greens better, Kodak, yellows and oranges. After chromes, then depending on the shot, Kodak or Fuji color.

But I know how you feel. I always felt the same about Agfa. Color, chrome, B/W, I just couldn't get anything that pleased me. Yet, I have seen others get great shots with it. Just not me.
