35RD service, is it worthy?

Hi guys,
While I am lurking in store, I got a 35RD for 20 EUR. The shutter is sticky, and I tried to open the front element but it is impossible so I gave up :bang:. Well maybe I must send it out to service but I dont know the price and if it is worthy, however the camera is a beauty and it fits my hand so well...

My RD is at Luton Camera right now getting expert attention. It's such a fantastic camera, it's worth getting it fettled.

Nowadays service can cost many times more than camera or lens itself. For certain cameras (and 35RD is one of them, I believe) one can pay for CLA and if it appears not being your cup of tea, then sell it and recover expenses on both camera and CLA. Someone seeking for a working camera will pay to have it. Providing receipt from recognized repair shop helps at this.

I had to answer myself the self question and I decided to get a complete workover by the "OM-Doktor" at Hamburg. He replaced the sealings, cleaned and relubed the shutter and focus and adapted the exposure-meter to 1,5 V. The camera is it worth.

I have heard about him but his charge is high for me so I will ask my local repairer in Berlin before sending it to him. 🙂

Ok I just gave it to one of my local repairmens. He quote me 60 EUR which is quite fair for me considering 80 EUR total price, which is still better than buying a working one for more than 90 EUR and waiting for sticky shutter developing.

I've put a couple of rolls through my RD since the service. It's a world better than the RC, and challenges the SP both for ease of use and the results.

My RD has been fixed a two times, now its costed me so much i can never sell it without taking a hard hit on it (moneywise).
I actually bought it in 2007 and had it fixed on shutter and rf and seals etc, also the battery to work on 1.5V. Then after i lend it once i got it back with the lens loose. Then it sat in drawer from 2010 until some weeks ago. This camera deserves to be used, that lens is such a gem and the camera itself is soooo silent. It nice sometimes to have an half-automatic camera.

For those who want an RD and can cope with no manual setting, go with the DC. It doesn't have the sticky shutter issue and has all the other pluses of the RD.

I have two RDs. Both developed sticky shutter problems shortly after purchase. I had one of them repaired by a guy in Newcastle, UK. I met him at a camera fair. He charged about £30 which was the cheapest quote at the time. For me, the repair was definitely worth it.

That sums up my 35RD experience. I've tried other semi-automatic, compact 35mm cameras - but the 35RD is still my favorite.
