Question to confirm that 3rd party lenses (Zeiss / Voightlander) on film and digital Leica M cameras will actually correctly trigger the frame lines when mounted. I have one Zeiss ZM lens, so can't see this for myself at the moment, and I'm curious. Thanks!

(Yes, I know this will be a "Duh!" but appreciate the acknowledgement. Thanks!)

Exceptions are, for example, 40mm lenses like Nokton 40/1.4. Because M Leica body don't have 40mm framelines (CL is the exception), it will bring up 50mm. Some of those lenses are modified to bring up 35mm lines instead. If you are buying second hand, you might want to check that with the seller. Also there are bunch of older CV lenses that are LTM with LTM-M adapter added. You obviously need to have the right adapter to bring up the correct framelines.

Third party glass in conventional focal lengths will bring out the frame lines they're expected to bring for their correct use. That has been my experience with Konica, Voigtländer and Zeiss lenses.

Now... whatever exceptions, they're just that, exceptions.

Sorry. Feeling a bit cranky this evening.

In this context Leica is the OEM (first party), the consumer (purchaser of the OEM gear) is the 2nd party, and the developer of the add-on/accessory (lens in this case) for the OEM gear is the third party

Possibly worth mentioning is LTM lenses. Leica thread mount lenses can be fitted with adapters for use on M mount cameras. The adapters are all the same in that they screw onto the lens and mount on the M bayonet. The bayonet mounts have different notches or codes cut into them to toggle the different frame lines. If you purchase an adapter, make sure it will toggle the correct frameline for your lens.

Ok, if Leica is 1st party glass, and Zeiss/Voigtlander is 3rd party... what is 2nd party glass?

I had several 2nd party glasses of Asahi Draft last night.

Next to the 40mm lenses mentioned above the only other exceptions that come to mind are

- CLE 28mm Rokkor
- very early, non-goggled 35mm Summaron made for the M3 with external finder

Roland.
