Hey everyone,

I just ordered an R3M and a 40 1.4 SC from Stephen Gandy and I'm wondering if the hood is necessary. I am fairly new to RFs (have an XA) and would like to know if I should purchase a hood and/or filter. Thanks much!

I use the 40 MC with the hood always - don't really know how necessary it is in terms of image quality (I've read that it improves the image by cutting out light at an oblique angle but I'm really no expert).

One of the key advantages I have found is that it offers some protection to the lens as the hood is rigid (metal) - the front element does seem quite exposed without it. I suppose using a filter on the front of the lens offers protection as well, but then the hood might reduce the risk of flaring with filters also.

With regard to filters, it is a personal choice - when shooting black & white I use a yellow or red occasionally, but if I had an 40 SC I would probably be tempted just to use the lens on its own.

Go for the hood - looks better too!

You have to remove the hood to change the filter btw...

There are cheaper alternatives than the CV hood available but I would definitely recommend some form of hood. The CV hood is very well made and looks very cool though.
