So I finally got one, the SC version.

First couple of rolls were shot at an engagement party last weekend. I like the lens a lot, handles nicely. 40mm is new to me, but I can already see it becoming my most used focal length. Before I got the lens I was leaning towards intending to file it to bring up the 35 lines on my cameras, but I'm happy with the framing I got using the 50 lines - in two rolls, only 3 or 4 shots I wasn't sure of the framing.

Unfortunately, I think I was having a bit of an anti-exposure brain-fart that night. Don't know what I was on 🙂

The attached came out okay, though. I think, anyway. One of the few.

All in all, I reckon this lens is a keeper, and then some. WooHoo!

Nice! As to exposure, I get your sense, but that's a really difficult situation, and I think the exposure is not too bad. Such a shot requires development that can handle such a range, i.e. N-2 in zone terms.

I really like the look from this lens, and 40 is a "perfect" FL for so many situations. There is more breathing room than a 50, but not quite as all-inclusive as 35.

Heh. That was one of the few I was reasonably happy with the exposure of.

That was XP2 Super. The other roll was Provia 400f pushed to 1600. There the range of the film just wasn't even close to up to the conditions 🙂

I didn't expect it to be the most appropriate, but I wanted to see how it did. See one attached (under tungsten light, obviously).

I like 40mm much more than 50. I really think that 40 is more of a normal lens than 50. 28mm is still my favourite focal length though. It will probably be my next lens.

I don't know if the VC 40 has the exact focal length of the Rokkor 40, but the Rokkor 40 is much closer to the 35 frame than the 50 in an M6. At infinity, it's nearly a perfect match for the 35 frame. Within 5 ft., then you need to frame with a little 'breathing room' to avoid lopping off heads or feet.

The VC 40 is really nice. I do find I sometimes get a vignetting effect on bright sky photos. I do not have the single coated version though.

Carl: Very nice. What EI do you use for the TCN? Is TCN materially different from the BW400 that is available as a consumer film?

Thanks Trius, I've been using EI 400 with standard C-41 processing. I don't know if this film is significantly different compared to the consumer version.

Your photo is a puzzler, with some ambiguous spaces, rather mysterious. I like it. 🙂

I too have the SC Nokton, and it seems stuck on my CLE now as I get familiar with it. One thing of note is that it must have a slightly longer focal length than the 40 Rokkor, maybe by a couple mm. I also have the Leica-thread Pentax 43mm and the Nokton seems pretty close, angle-wise. Could explain why the 50 frames are working reasonably well for you. As you might guess, I really like the 40-ish focal length, and hope you continue to like yours!

(And I have the Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Ultron for Pentax-K as well, while the 60mm on the Fuji GS645 and 65mm on the Bronica RF have about the same 40-like angle of view too.)
