I've just ordered some filters and hoods from a seller who has bent over backwards to make me a happy customer. He sells under the name "OldEnglishChina". I ordered some filters and he was out of a couple so he offered me alternatives and then threw in a lens cap and filter pouch free.

I asked him if he could get 40.5mm filters and hoods as many Russian lenses for the FEDs, Zorkis, Kievs etc. use 40.5mm filters and the FSU sellers don't offer them normally. Examples of FSU lenses that use the 40.5mm accessories include the J-8, J-11 & J-12. Others may as well. (The J-9 uses 49mm).

He's replied that he can order them and it would take from 1-3 months to receive them.

Would anyone here besides me be interested in reasonably priced 40.5mm filters and lens hoods?

I have also had success in using 40.5mm filters with my Leica Summarit, which takes even harder to find 41mm filters. I wrap a little teflon plumbing tape around the threads before putting them in: works fine. Beats $50 per filter on Ebay!

I've been going nuts trying to find them. I'd love to order a nice set of bw filters and a handful of uv's and hoods.

I have to put a plug in for a business local to me. Just a couple weeks ago I went to their location and met some of the folks there and was very happy with what I found.

AKA the Filter Connection in Windham CT is an e-business with no retail store in the traditional sense. I infact purchased a couple lens hoods, including one for my J8 in size 40.5. I offer this as an alternative as they may stock, or be able to deliver what you are looking for in a shorter period of time.

For me, the answer is yes, I do need to make up a list of little stuff that I need, including some 40.5mm stuff.

Luckly, I went down to my local, old fashioned, family-owned camera store and rummaged through the drawer of old filter adapters. I helps having worked there. Found a 40.5mm Series VI filter holder. Already had a set of Series VI filters for B&W. Comes in very handy. Also picked up a 40.5 Zeiss/Ikon yellow off Ebay cheap. I think I'm set, thanks.

I'll go have a look first in my local used camera shops. If no joy I might order a hood, UV and Y2 filter for my new J-8.

Another plug, though not really a local store (at least not for me).

Speedgraphic.co.uk has a wide selection of brands and filter/hood sizes available. You can order their catalog here:

Photographic "disposables" are either hard to find here in Holland, or bl**dy expensive and I was very glad to find this store. I got my 40.5mm hoods and 49mm hood (for the J-9) here. They promptly delivered and answered any questions swiftly. The only odd thing is their shipping policies. It was cheaper for me to have them send my order (of about a dozen, small items like hoods and a lens pen) in 2 batches than in 1.

Yup, I already have some hoods but would find interesting to have some stock of 40.5 and 43mm filters as well as some 40 ones for the Canon 50/1.8...

I don't mind too much going unfiltered with the Jupiters or the CV lens (very hard coatings) but with the Sonnar or the Canon now that's another story...

You can also buy 40.5 mm filters from bhphoto.com. I have a nice B&W filter I bought from them, but it wasn't cheap. As I recall, it set me back $40. But my Contax deserves nice filters!

Let's see...40.5 red, yellow, yellow-green, IR, and ND. Those would be really helpful.
Unfortuneatly, there is no local store here anymore.
Walker, if you put together a list I,m definitely interested!

I bought my 40.5mm filters from random places on eBay and had no trouble finding what I wanted at very reasonable prices. I have a UV, med. yellow, green and red.

The red is ironically enough, a perfect older Zeiss filter marked "Zeiss Ikon Stuttgart". The UVs are branded Bower but made by Hoya and appear to be very high quality.

What's a series 6 filter? I am going to a couple of used camera shops today, and I'll look for you. I still have to get your film and other yellow out to you.

KK, in addition to filters that are threaded for specific sizes, e.g., 49mm, 52mm etc, there are also series filters without threads. They use an adapter ring into which the series filter is dropped and then a threaded ring secures it in place. It allows using the same filters on multiple lenses using one adapter on each lens.

Series filters are made in sizes V, VI, VII & VIII that I know of.
