I have a couple of the 40.5mm vented hoods from eBay seller heavystar. Nice hoods, and usually about 12 USD. Another eBay called american eagle sells similar products. The heavystar hoods are well=made, and do not block too much of the viewfinder on my Contax RFs.

The would fit perfectly old SLRs like the Mamiya Auto lux or some others.
For a long time Hoya made a beautiful 40.5 mm vented hood, that was the closest I´ve ever seen to those made by Leitz.

Some years ago I bought a pair for my Kiev and Contax, but I´m sure they are still available. Price in Argentina was about USD 10 ea. so I figure they won´t be extremely expensive today.

I like the hoods from AmericanEagle. The vented ones from heavystar are a little too bulky, but they are also nice hoods.

A few days ago there was a thread on this, and apparently there is a lot of good stuff in the archives.

Might be CL/CLE specific, but I initially ordered a heavystar vented, and as I went through the archived threads, changed my order to an even lower cost 40.5 "wide angle" which may have less blockage. Fortunately heavystar is going to send the latter one, and credited me the difference, great folks.

there are snap on fed rectangular hoods(42mm) that fit j-8 (and i-61) perfectly.Oleg sells them for 7.5$ or so.

I just received from HeavyStar a 43mm vented hood for the 40 Nokton, and find the venting is unnecessary. The outer rim of the hood intrudes only slightly into the corner of the 40 framelines anyway. The hood could benefit from a reverse taper as with the Leica 12585

if you want the cheapest, ask some FSU seller for a 42 snap-on plastic hood. I got one for a few bucks, round, made for the J-8 i think. (alex-photo was the seller). They might not have it listed but they might have some on stock. I asked, he had it.

If you want a bit better, or screw-in, go for a vented hood as said above.
The original Zeiss one is also nice but usually too expensive.

Edit: here's the vented one from "american eagle". A nice seller to trade with. (A propos: he gave me pos. feedback after the first email, BEFORE i made the payment!!! something unseen on e-bay)
