Hey Folks! I'm looking for a 40mm lens cap for a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. It doesn't have to be canon, it only has to fit. I also saw a 40 mm hood listed at Cameraquest, Gandy's site, does anyone know if this hood fits the Canon 50mm 1.8 correctly? Thanks for any help you can provide.
I have a 42mm cap that fits over the outside diameter of the filter ring on mine. It is actually a plastic Leica cap.

John,
I use a 40.5 mm snap cap from http://www.ecamerastore.com/e-catalog/lens_caps.html on my 35/2. Cheapest source of generic caps. No experience with the camerquest hood.

yeah, the russian hoods fit the outside diameter also.
keep your eyes on ebay also. i got a metal walz screw in cap in 40mm size. it was for show originally but i put it on the 35/2 ever since i dropped my camera.
gandy's site says the 40mm hood works for the 50/1.8

Leica 42mm caps fit the 35/1.8 perfectly and should fit the 50mm. Practical, if a little perverse.

I have some 42mm "Schneider Kreuznach" (LF) plastic caps. Fits the Canon 1.8/50, 1.5/50, 1.8/35, 2/35 and maybe others. The best are some Russian "FED" caps for the Jupiter 1.5/50 for 3USD each.. fitting excellent (rimp short as the Canon metal caps)

I have an original Canon one, but I keep it in my drawer and use a simple metal russian one, as mentioned by Sonnar2, instead. It works perfectly.

Or, if you are feeling rather rich, $30 buys it now on eBay. Item 7509268692.
I just paid $25 for one at a camera show, but it was really nice, and it was the only one I needed to keep the appropriate lenses covered. Plus, without shipping definitely a better buy.
I also got a very nice 42mm off-brand plastic cap for $1 at the same show!
