400ft of Kodak XX all gone...

Welll...look at it this way. At least now you have had lots of practice loading film in the light...and you have more film that you can use to practice some more. You will have this down pat! And a photo seminar that taught you to do all this would almost certainly have cost you $200.

And you will never, never, never, never forget this little lesson! 🙂

Hm.

I'm thinking this film probably wasn't all dead, just the outer few winds of film on the roll. the rest would have been shielded from the light since it was tightly wound...

Now that you have dumped it in the bin, that's not all that relevant anymore btw...

Sorry for your loss.

I did something similar recently with a 100' roll of Ilford HP5+. I discovered much to my dismay that Ilford does not put their bulk rolls into a tin like the other brands of 100' Ive used. So the roll was loose inside of the untaped light resistant bag and stuck in the box. I did not realize this and reached in and grabbed the roll to put it into the changing bag. It was exposed to the light in the room for 3-4 seconds as a result before I realized and shoved it back into the dark bag.

I ended up with about 3 layers of ruined film and then about 2 fogged and then the next layers had ghosts of the sprocket holes from layer to layer. ALL of it has the edges exposed, but not far enough to get into the 35mm frames to be a problem. And beyond that it's good.

Just think, you could be Edward Snowden holed up in Hong Kong right now, watching for that drone with his name on it..... instead it's just some photographs and film.

You loaded the film with light on? Duuude.

That's like the guy on ebay selling 37pc. 11x14 fb Ilford FB sheets for 79$ + 14$ shipping after having counted them in his living room and took a picture of it as proof 🙂

Glad to hear you are ordering another 400' roll. I ruined some XX in a bulk loader last year, although it was maybe twenty-five feet or so. Was mad mad mad. Got over it and went on.

If there was a lot more people around like you ... film would have a secure future!

Sorry ... that was mean! 😀

I can feel with you.
Two years ago I loaded some IXMOOs with N74 and turned the light on without re-wrapping the film bulk.

The good thing: I (and most likely you too) will never again make this mistake.

Alright so I am the first dude in the world who loaded film with safe light on...🙁

I once bought a bulk loader at a flea market, and the owner proudly showed me that it was still loaded. So I've got about three quarters of a roll to practice on before I load it with some good film.

Some times I ask myself why I want to make life so difficult for myself...😱

The 400ft Kodak XX will not fit into any bulk loaders. I have to load it by pulling a strip of 36 exposures with my both arms stretched open.

Really sorry to hear about this, Vincent.

Hm.

What Johan says reminds me of what happened to a bulk roll of Kentmere 400 I opened recently to load with my Alden 200.

When I opened the box I saw the film roll was in a black plastic bag, the upper part and opening of which had been folded around and under the roll. Thinking that "surely the film will be in a metal can", I took out the roll from the box, unfolded the plastic bag, reached in through the opening...and discovered raw unprotected film.

In a ridiculous moment, thinking that I could somehow prevent light from entering the bag, I hurriedly folded the plastic bag around film and clenched it tight with my hand.

As fate would have it, light seems not to have damaged the roll. I have so far shot rolls from the outermost parts of the bulk roll and they haven't been fogged. I'll see how the innermost parts of the bulk roll will be when I get to it. Perhaps the fact that the room was pretty dim (though by no means dark) saved me. We'll see.

Anyway, I'll be loading some XX tonight and will be extra careful.
