Just wondering, did Canon make a special slim version 40mm filter for these lenses? I would like to be able to use a yellow filter on it without vignetting.

Does anyone have one for me?

thanks, Rob.

Hi Rob,
I don't know about a Canon one. Hopefully my 25 should be here in a week or so. If you haven't found one by then, give me a shout and I may be able to sort something.

How do you rate the 25. I did ask the question a couple of days ago but apart from Joe saying he was interested as well, there were no replies.

Regards
Kim

Sorry Kim, I missed the question. In a few days I will get a roll with the first 25mm shots back. Hoping, hoping...
You have one coming your way? Nice.

I will keep you posted.

Rob.

i want one too!!

canon has older filters, chrome rim, no threads for a hood, that are fairly tiny.

keep your eyes on ebay.

I have been watching, the only one I have seen have gone for silly prices. One of the things I want to try is to take the glass out of a "normal" 40 and give the frame to an engineering friend and get him to turn to frame down effectively geting rid of the extra thickness of the thread at the front.

Rob, I sent Brian Sweeney a 40mm lens made by Walz, marked to fit Canon, and from what I remember the rim was very thin. I have some 40 yellows, but they're thick rimmed. I'll take a look to see if I have any more thin rimmed anything in 40mm, and you can just swap the glass. Stu

Thanks Stu and all others. I am used to Leica 39mm which so not fit the Canon. Having something in 40 mm would help for a start. Preferrably a yellow filter! :D
Joe and Kim - I will keep you posted.

I bought a Canon 40mm uv filter to fit the 25mm lens at the same time I bought the lens ,all those years ago, from Alt Camera . the filter has the glass quite flush with the rim at the front, different from the filters that go on the Canon 50mm f1.8

Interesting! Is that a filter mounted directly to the lens with only a retainer ring? Or is it a unit you can unscrew, a whole filter? In the last case the whole side has to have a thread, no? If it is quite flush as you mention.
Do you have a photo of it please?
I did find someone selling 40mm UV filters but they are like normal filters, about 3 to 4mm ring I think.

thanks, Rob.

I have a similiar filter but in 55mm thread on the QL17. The front of the filter has a very small lip. The glass goes in from the back and is held in place with a sprung steel ring. When munted, the filter is just under 4mm thick.

I had Canon 40's years ago, very very thin rimmed (about 1.5mm), chrome with no front thread, the box described them as 40W (wide?? ) the Canon 40 which came with my f1.8 was of normal thickness.

it is just like a regular filter, but with very little protrusion of the metal rim. the glass is almost flush with the metal rim. there is knurling on the side edge of the thin rim, to help you get a good grip on this filter when you screw it on or off the lens.

the rim of the Canon filter mounted on my Canon 25mm lens is way thinner than that example Kim, in fact there is no space to put the engraved writing on the edge side. it is on the front rim alla a car tire.

I suspect that the overall design is similiar. The glass on this one is about the thickness of the knurled section. With a 40, they can use thinner glass and this was made for a "normal" lens on one of the early Canonet QL17's.

i was just thinking, i had one of those flat filters in 34mm also and now it's gone too.

i gotta start writing things down...

Yes that is the same as mine were, I still have a similar 34mm Canon filter, I've no idea what lens it was for, I used to use it on my Leitz 28mm Hektor. the writing on it is also on the "face" of the mount.
P.S. It didn't vignette!
