and might you be interested in ridding yourself of that same now unused 34mm canon filter?

The 40 mm filter was very thin, there were no front threads, 25 years ago I loaned my 40 mm canon filter to a friend who was a working pro that was using the 25 mm lens on a leica and he sent it off and had a couple of filters made that were just as thin. I don't know who it was, but the 100 mm f3.5 black and the 35 mm f2.0 also took the same size which I used it on.

Thank you all for your input. This did not make things easier but at least we all know more now.
What a great forum!
cheers, Rob.

My 50/1.5 has just arrived in the office and it came with 3 Walz filters. The UV is about 3mm and yellow about 4mm thick but both are double threaded. The orange is super slim (about 2mm) and is similiar to the canon 55mm one in construction with the exception that the glass goes in from the front. I will post a pic tonight before I mess with the glass. I will try the different options when my 25 arrives later. To be honest, I do very little B/W but mainly use slide film. If anyone wants to swap the yellow/dark orange for a similiar UV or 81/82 series I would be interested.

Congrats Kim,
Orange may already become vignetting because of the darkness of the filter. This happens very much with filters on the 15mm. Because of the longer distance of light through the filter in corners than in the middle.

Rob, Ritzcam has the filters you need. They're listed under "Canon Rangefinder Accesories".

i sold the collapsible 50 to a 'neighbor' of yours.
besides that's a 40mm filter, i thought we were talking 34mm!
i have a few 34mm filters but they are harder to find than 40 so i like to collect as many as i can get hold of.
in fact i started buying the leitz 36mm clamp on. they work well and are quick on & off, quicker than screw on.
and hope you had a great holiday also!

Thanks Stu, problem is that Ritzcam is one of those 'Selling Elephant Shops'. Many stores in the US tend to be SES because of terrible shipping charges overseas. It will cost only a few dollars really to ship two filters to me but they charge $50 for oveseas. Domestic is already $15. This way they are expensive filters.
I will ask them about this.

HI,
Canon did make 40mm flat filters between 1955 and 1961 and came in 6 colours plus a UV. They are really very flat, probably sitting 1.5mm above the lens rim when screwed in and a little over 2mm width. Doubt if there would be any vignetting but as I have not used them not sure. the later filters can be found in blue boxes with a small peep hole in the box. The filters have the information on the top of the filter not on the side as the thicker filters have. Cheers Peter K.
PS...OK where is the spell-check.....my life depends on it....
